NLP and Psychic Development

In my journey of exploring the depths of human consciousness and potential, I have delved into numerous studies and a wealth of literature. During part of this journey, I supported my partner in developing her psychic skills however, we often had conflicts. The first books in NLP were called ‘The Structure of Magic Vol.1 & 2″ and was based on deciphering how psychotherapist/healers did their magic! Yet, those on the psychic development path would say, don’t deconstruct the Magic. Just believe in it. Both perspectives are absolutely beautiful.

This exploration has led to a fascinating discovery of the points of convergence and divergence between Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) and Psychic Development. This article aims to illuminate where these two realms support each other, their distinct characteristics, and areas where they might conflict. This understanding is not just academic; it offers practical insights into how we can harness the strengths of both disciplines for personal growth and deeper self-awareness. More will definitely flow from this as I develop more in both spaces. The Psychic / ESP world is very real and perhaps everyone has the ability to grow.

1. Conflict between NLP and Psychic Development: The Locus of Control

  • NLP’s Internal Locus of Control: Experienced NLP practitioners understand the risks of believing too strongly in control. They advocate for a more internal locus, where individuals feel they have power over their actions and responses.
  • Psychic Development’s External Locus: Conversely, psychic development often leans towards an external locus of control. Practitioners might interpret signs like ‘888’ as messages from external entities like spirits or guides, influencing their actions.

2. Common Ground: Pattern Detection

  • Pattern Recognition in NLP: NLP focuses on identifying and understanding patterns. These patterns are mainly in thought, communication and behavior. It emphasizes verifying these patterns and differentiating between presuppositions (what is in the actual communication) and mind reads. While you can use mindreads and intuition, there is a leaning to test, validate, and verify.
  • Psychic Development and Patterns: Psychic practices also involve pattern recognition, often attributing meaning to minor details such as seeing specific numbers or a feeling. This highlights the importance of confirming and validating insights, especially in the early stages of psychic development. If someone is pursuing psychic development I believe its imperative to establish clearer communication and validation processes early.

3. Higher Levels of Development: Unity and Interconnectedness

  • Spiral Dynamics in NLP: Some NLP training includes spiral dynamics, which addresses various levels of psychological and emotional development. The higher levels of Spiral Dynamics (Tier 2) emphasise the interconnectedness and unity of life, a key belief in psychic development.
  • Diverse Levels of Students: It’s important to recognize that both NLP and psychic students may be at different levels of this spiral. Those deeply involved in psychic or mindful practices at the true ‘Guru’ level, tend to operate at higher levels, indicating a more integrated belief system. Some Gurus embrace this higher level yet aspects of them are still in the Shadows. It is said that Osho, a highly controversial guru was very developed but may have had unintegrated shadow aspects. Perhaps the same with Tony Robbins.

4. The Role of the Unconscious

  • Conscious and Unconscious in NLP: NLP delineates between conscious (aware) and unconscious (unaware) mind states. Simply what is and isn’t awareness. What is, is conscious, what isn’t is unconscious. NLP is constantly utilising the best of both worlds to create change. Hypnosis, Trancework, Rituals (a set of frames), Modelling and getting to the level of ‘unconscious competence’ is the name of the game.
  • Psychic Development’s View on Unconsciousness: Similarly, psychic development respects the unconscious, albeit with different terminologies. Both fields value the unconscious for its role in fostering congruence and guiding actions, as seen in practices like channeling and trance.

In summary, while NLP and psychic development have their distinct approaches, they both contribute to a broader understanding of human cognition and spirituality. Their intersection offers a rich tapestry for exploring the depths of human consciousness and potential. Take note and put your effort into ensuring the elements that conflict become integrated, a possibility and a complimentary rather than a hinderance.
