In Webster’s dictionary self mastery is defined as the ability to control one’s own desires or impulses. Psychologists call it self-discipline or self-control, and it’s the ability to get yourself to consistently behave in ways that move you toward your goals rather than away from them. It’s the ability to set a course of action and keep moving forward no matter how hard it gets or how unmotivated you feel. The ability to recognize, understand, control, and make the most out of your physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual self. 

How to achieve self mastery?

First step is to become aware. To be aware is to be present—to live in this moment, the NOW. To be aware is to always keep coming back to what is happening NOW. The NOW is where you connect with your Higher Self, with your Essence. Being aware is to witness your thoughts, emotions, actions, and the world with non-attachment.

Second step is to make difference. Making difference allows to choose wisely. You need to be aware that there are choices and then choose consciously—to become the conscious choice-maker. Everything in life is a choice. Your choices create the life you live. This doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t use your commonsense, but always remember that first impulse from the heart when making the final decision.

Third is to decide on your action. You have to have the courage to act on your choice. You must also be focused on your goal to master yourself. It requires you to be one-pointed without being rigid. It requires you to stay alert, unemotional, and mature.

And lastly you must come to your realization. Imagine what it will be like to have no boundaries or limitations, to be free, and for all your actions to be spontaneously correct and all desires spontaneously fulfilled.

Benefits of Self Mastery

Self Mastery can help you develop attitudes and habits in order for you to create and live your life. If you have developed self mastery you can control yourself at any given situation. You can move towards your goals with discipline. You will have the confidence to do things in a  purposeful way. Self mastery will also help you have clarity on what is really important to you. It teaches you to live the moment with happiness, love and gratefulness.

This is a collection of over 15 suggestions for easier natural sleep. For years I’ve struggled. Far more so when I’ve had a lot going on in my life. I’ve tried a variety of things and read a lot. This is all from my experimenting and reading. Everything here, in my opinion, is powerful. 

My first experience with Non-Violent Communication was through an Executive Coach I had hired to assist me with balancing some stressful issues I was handling. I hired this Coach as I was really curious what it could do for me and one of the biggest things I learned is that I was communicating rather ‘roughly’ or not seeing ‘eye to eye’ with some people in my life. Anyhow, I got through the situation, got a positive result but knew there was still more to go. A year or two later I watched the Coach deliver a workshop on NVC. Later getting some books and audio programmes to deepen my learnings. Here are my translations and short form of the topic.

It’s amazing, even world champions can find themselves reacting to challenging or even little things. I’m completely guilty of overreacting very often in my relationship with my wife and sometimes simple things in a social media group would ‘trigger’ me and set me off in a rage. Many of my clients shared the same struggle. One of them, a C-Suite Executive, very successful career-minded woman, asked me for a solution and we ‘coached’ on it regularly as she changed her direction in life. Yet what I’m about to share, is ‘next level’. I’ve shared this with clients in 2017-18 and they have greatly reduced re-activity in days! So this is super powerful stuff if you implement it.

It’s interesting how much of our world today is focused on everything else but the perfection of the present.

And we have all heard “Follow your gut”, “Don’t lose your head”, “Be true to your heart”.

Rummi, Osho, Eckhart Tolle, Deepak Chopra, are all well known spiritual teachers who in various ways tell us to listen to our hearts. But what does this mean? Is this just ‘mindfulness’ or spiritual wish wash?

Finally, western science is playing catch up!

A snippet of what is to come:

“Research in the new discipline of neurocardiology shows that the heart is a sensory organ and a sophisticated center for receiving and processing information. The nervous system within the heart (or “heart brain”) enables it to learn, remember, and make functional decisions independent of the brain’s cerebral cortex. Moreover, numerous experiments have demonstrated that the signals the heart continuously sends to the brain influence the function of higher brain centers involved in perception, cognition, and emotional processing.

In addition to the extensive neural communication network linking the heart with the brain and body, the heart also communicates information to the brain and throughout the body via electromagnetic field interactions. The heart generates the body’s most powerful and most extensive rhythmic electromagnetic field. Compared to the electromagnetic field produced by the brain, the electrical component of the heart’s field is about 60 times greater in amplitude, and permeates every cell in the body.” Rollin McCraty, Ph.D. Heartmaths

Science is also pointing to intelligence in our gut. It may not be brain cells, however the gut also has a quantity of Neurons which make up it’s own intelligence network. Which is really interesting as the gut was the first of the 3 brains discussed here to be created. Most of us can relate to the experience of having butterflies in our stomach, or to a visceral gut-wrenching feeling, and how often are we told not to ignore our “gut-instinct” or “gut-feeling” when making a decision.

Poor gut health has been implicated in neurological and neuropsychiatric disorders. There is now research that is linking depression as an inflammatory disorder mediated by poor gut health. In fact, multiple animal studies have shown that manipulating the gut microbiota in some way can produce behaviors related to anxiety and depression. However which is the side affect and which is the cause? Is it Psychology leading the body or the body leading psychology?

Further studies and a methodology known as mBraining, or mBIT (multiple Brain Integration Techniques) was developed by Grant Soosalu and Marvin Oka. Grant and Marvin have backgrounds in behavioural change technologies which include NLP, Modelling and traditional Psychology. (Hence the titles or first lines, What is mBraining. In their book mBraining they explain the prime functions of the 3 brains.

The Gut Brain:

  • Mobilization
  • Self-Preservation
  • Core Identity

The Head Brain:

  • Cognitive Perception

Please note, I’m not saying these prime functions are limited only to the particular brain they’re associated with. Obviously the head brain, with it’s approximately 100 billion neurons is far more complex then the heart or gut brain and is involved in all functions at some level.

In this upcoming session with Adrian Cahill we will look at where this all comes from, what we need to learn from it, and how we can best use it to gain more wholesomeness in our life. MBraining is extremely useful in decision making and living an integral life.

With an understanding of mBraining and Heartmaths (a tool/technology for measuring heart rate variability) it is possible to add new layers of depth and awareness to EVERYTHING we do. I’m writing this article for anyone considering a Business Coach or an Executive Coach in China as there appears to be a lack of credible information here behind the Great Wall.

For actual “Coaching/Mentoring” location can be irrelevant. But this article is focused for Executives in China. Hence Executive Coach in China is repeated. 

This is article will highlight the differences and also what to look for. The signs or clues of competency.

In respect to all my writings please note: I’m a professional Coach not a writer. I promise you will find and be able to understand everything despite errors. (‘Executive Coach in China’).

Tip 1.  I recommend phone/Skype calling as it makes it incredibly easy for both parties. Really, it’s so simple. They can go to another place in the office environment or go for a walk in a park if the call is in work hours. Or what I recommend most is sitting in nature, finding a quiet place to sit, or going for a walk (if weather and pollution is manageable).


The difference between a Business Coach and an Executive Coach in China?

Let’s draw some distinctions in terms of; emphasis, focus, and training.

“Business Coaching” is an alternative term or derived from the field of consulting. Some research shows: “Many Business Coaches refer to themselves as consultants, a broader business relationship than one which exclusively involves coaching.”

I regularly work with an amazing woman. She is very business savvy, on the ball, a top notch business owner, business developer, business adviser, business consultant. She also calls herself from time to time a ‘Business Coach’.

Would I want her coaching me on my business?

“Hell yeah!”

Business Coaches can be like sports coaches and I like how clear and simple it can be. Only, the industry is less regulated and perhaps doesn’t need regulation. Business Coaches typically meet clients through referrals and people judge them on their reputation. Hence they get hired based off their results and the confidence the client has that the coach can help them achieve their goal.

Several good friends of mine have hired Business Coaches to help them grow their business. I’ll be happy to recommend and connect you to their coaches because my friends have already earned their money back and are now stepping up their businesses to new levels. I see this over and over again. People are great at what they do but have weaknesses. The Business Coaches have helped them with their weaknesses. Have also held them accountable for specific changes, hitting milestones, and staying on track.

Overall I have heard mixed reviews therefore am happy to recommend one that has proven success with one of my friends or clients. The Busines Coach I mentioned, sold her last business for something like $6Million USD so I think she knows a bit about Business.

What Coaches actually do, their experience and ability is not always clear. Especially with Coaches in Asia and the developing countries.

In these and many places Coaches are often consultants using a label of ‘Executive Coach’ or ‘Business Coach’. So it’s really good to identify if they fit into this diagram. If not, what and how do they work?

As the diagram above illustrates, Executive Coaching focuses more on personal or individual success which can lead to business success.

Business coaching is focused on business success not individual success. I feel this is why it so often fails. I believe it is best for your average participant to undergo a life or executive coaching program first to ensure individual success is imminent. Then the participant can afford an expert Business Coach highly suitable for their business or business goals. The Business Coach then doesn’t have to worry about the participant not following through or not being able to lead the team to growth.

So there you have the Executive Coach in China working on individual success while the Business Coach works on Business Success presuming the participant already has the aptitude to make the engagement successful.

You may also feel or see a slight overlap between Executive Coaching and Business Coaching. You may see an even bigger overlap between Executive Coaching and Life Coaching. After all Executive Coaching is more like ‘Advanced Life Skills’. Both Executive and Life Coaching can be used to help someone with teamwork, leadership, delegation, time management, interviews, public speaking, conflict resolution, and the list goes on. It is possible to view Executive Coaching as a ‘higher level’ of Life Coaching. (Higher as in more professional and generally more expensive).

Note: Sadly Life Coaching is often associated with Tony Robbins or High School Guidance Counsellors. However, it is the core skill or most abstract type of coaching. Often there is a time when Executives and Business Owners may need to simply ease up on goals, and get more focused and in touch with their lives. 


Who is an Executive?

Textbook definition, Executive is anyone who makes decisions.

Personally, I’ve assisted a lot of executives with improving their team skills, leadership skills, presentation, confidence and communications which has lead them to prompt promotions and salary increases. My average client receives salary improvements of at least 20% in the first 6 months of coaching. An ROI on time alone of 260%. Full ROI’s averaging over 500% in the year of coaching. Most of my coaching engagements go from 3 to 18 months. My coaching can be taken as Life Coaching, or Executive Coaching. 50% of my clients own or are creating business but I certainly don’t consider or call myself a Business Coach. I feel strongly drawn towards working with business owners, C-Suite, successful business/career orientated people.  

Executives value the completely confidential and judgement free space to discuss and dive deeper than your average great conversation. In the coaching space, executives can really stretch further into possibilities, stretching beyond what they originally thought was possible. You may find yourself highlighting and choosing to confront beliefs and perceptions that limit you and then choose alternatives. It’s truly taking responsibility and taking a hold on your perceptions and destiny. It often described as gaining clarity, seeing the bigger picture, but it’s all that and so much more.


If hiring your own Coach

An Executive Coach in China, a Business Coach or even a Life Coach:

I’m certainly available to engage in a conversation and help advise yet please consider the following 3 tips to ensure you find a good fit:

1. Check for work/life history on Linkedin.

    • If the Coach comes from your industry can appear great and it should feel more natural. Be aware, it can also be a hindrance as the Coach may buy into the same limitations that you see. The Coach may also share similar thinking styles and approaches. Someone that hasn’t been in your industry, will certainly see things with fresher eyes. Differences offer opportunities for new insights and depth.
    • Rather than time your industry, a Coach that has gotten results with people in your industry or people wanting to achieve similar goals to you.
    • If they are a full time coach or a successful coach, than their current Linkedin occupation should reflect this.
    • If you see previous experience in Marketing or Sales, expect that their marketing or sales skills may be higher than their ability to actually perform coaching roles.


2. Check for references and testimonials that lead to real people. It is sadly becoming common practice online for people to write their own endorsements and sign it off as ‘Jay Blogs, MD’ or ‘Annette, IBM’. I know for a fact IBM has a strong Internal Coaching program and if Annette was really impressed why would she not leave her full name. Again Linkedin is a great way to check for real references and testimonies. Also be aware of programs valued at thousands of dollars, are often sold at huge discounts in exchange for a video reference. This is common practice for $10,000 plus programs.

It’s where the proficient full time coaches are. For Business Coaches check for Business training and history like a MBA, a business Diploma or AICD (Australian Institute of Company Directors).

As an x-soldier serving on various deployments in places like Afghanistan and running my first team in ‘hot’ live-action filled places, most people would say I might know a thing or two about Leadership. This includes Leadership Development in China where I have lived and continue to funnel efforts into social enterprise and development. I find leadership development in China is an exciting field to be in. I personally enjoy a ‘piece of the action’ nowadays through being a coach for Expats and small business owners behind the great wall of China. 

People are often surprised when they hear about my Army background. They say things like, but you’re so calm. I may be calm. But I’ve had my fair share of unexpected demons along with a ride of ups and downs. People often say they don’t have the discipline to be in the armed forces and I respect that. Often I find myself talking with high-quality men and women from a variety of backgrounds and find we have a lot in common. But yes, soldiers generally do have a lot of discipline.

For years I thought the best characteristic for being an effective soldier was discipline. It is vital yet my struggles lead me to deep research and endless studies with some surprising findings.

I would like to share one particular study with you as this links back to the Article about Yin and Yang which is actually a comparison between the Eastern or Taoist Yin Yang and the Western Autonomic Nervous System (ANS). This will all make sense in less than 5 minutes.

Leadership Development in China is missing the point.

Discipline is vital, but so is self-leadership, self-efficacy, self-motivation. In fact, there is a pile of vital keys which may make leadership development or leadership coaching a hot topic but they are missing the point.  Leadership development in China and beyond will soon be realising some new truths and slowly, very slowly it’s coming out. 

A recent study compared Navy SEALs to “non-elite” conventional military groups (elite vs. non-elite). The SEALs had higher heart rate dipping, which means that during sleep, when the parasympathetic system takes over to induce recovery, their heart rates dropped by an average of 29%, whereas the non-elites dropped by only 21%.

The SEALs also had lower baseline levels of the stress hormone cortisol during the day while in a non-stressed environment, despite an equal level of cortisol release during a stressful survival course. Cortisol is released by the ANS.

Meaning they had lower heart rates, and lower stress hormones when they were in safer conditions. The ability to relax well is an asset. If they were unable to relax, their body would not recover and they would suffer more long-term issues arising from excess stress.  The ability to quickly switch from sympathetic to parasympathetic is something that can be learned and developed.

In another study comparing Australian Special Forces soldiers to conventional troops during an intense training course, the Special Forces soldiers were found to have higher levels of sympathetic-driven nor-epinephrine during the stressful scenarios. When the training was over, the nor-epinephrine levels of the Special Forces soldiers returned to pre-training baseline, whereas the non-elite soldiers had significantly depressed levels. Their sympathetic system was exhausted. These elite soldiers, when stressed had even higher levels of stress-related chemicals to help them fight, and again, they were able to drop down into relax mode better than non-elite.

The vital key missing from a lot of leadership development coaches, speakers or leadership development experts in China and greater Asia, the key is this awareness and skill in influencing the ANS. Being able to fully be in the sympathetic system when required. Being able to access well. And then switching to the parasympathetic system and really recovering.

The sympathetic system and parasympathetic system are in my opinion the real Yin Yang often spoken about in the East and in traditional Chinese Medicine. Elite soldiers, elite leaders are often unaware of this terminology, but they thoroughly understand the concept of ‘Work hard, rest hard’. By being able to fully swing high on each end of the Autonomic Nervous System we are able to gain a broader reach with our bodies system, emotional flexibility, over all capabilities and both long and short term success.

This skill of switching consciously, (by choice) can be trained and developed. Making it happen faster and further is something I experienced first hand as a soldier preparing for Afghanistan. It’s something I enjoyed teaching and challenging my team to do better in.

Currently, I’m working with a few executive clients in the Asian cities. We work pre-dominantly through simple coaching conversations. In these conversations we can role play, create visualizations, or use more complicated technology like the HeartMaths systems (a device for monitoring Heart Rate Variability (HRV).

If I were to ‘sell you’ Leaderships Coaching’ or ‘Leadership Development Coaching’ I might empathizes discipline, or time management but these are smaller details or smaller skills which are a side effect of an effect coming from a ‘better place’ emotionally/calmly/physically. Hence you can focus (or sell) development products all day. And this can be good business. Like, keep selling motivation tapes. Go faster, go harder. To get real results fast and easily it’s about the maximizing the emotional and behavioral flexibility of the individual. This is greatly assisted by having them control there own Autonomic Nervous System, like the aforementioned ‘Elite Soldier studies’. When soldiers (or executives) are in the right mode, they are more likely to naturally display the calmer, more preciese behavior and flexibility which leads to far better resluts. Naturally developing, naturally growing, naturally becoming more and more elite through mastering ones ability to become centered.

If you get outside and it’s 15 degrees and if you believe or perceive that as cold, you will react however you react. If you get outside and it’s 30 degrees, then your belief and perception may quickly change. Yet to some people 15 degrees may warm. And sometimes, I see people wearing a jumper even when I feel it’s quite warm.

I believe almost everyone in this world is loving and caring. I believe strangers are just friends I haven’t met yet. These beliefs support me in my day to day life.

Your beliefs are the foundation of your personality. They ultimately shape you as worthy or worthless, powerful or powerless, competent or incompetent, trusting or suspicious, belonging or outcast, self-reliant or dependent, flexible or judgmental, fairly treated or victimized, loved or hated. Your beliefs have far reaching consequences both positive and negative, in your life. Beliefs affect your mood, relationships, job performance, self-esteem, physical and mental health, even your religious and spiritual outlook.

When I was 7, I was taught don’t talk to strangers. Imagine being 30, trying to network but still having this belief.

As an adult, I tried to change these beliefs. Sometimes I bought programs, books, cd sets, dvd’s and seminar tickets.

  2. You often do the reading/listening/actions by yourself. (Trying to push a car uphill)

You may be reading this because you stumbled upon my page or perhaps your fascinated with East to West methodologies. Or perhaps some other reason but, either way it boils down to this:

Yin and Yang is a simple concept. One of the biggest killers of people in this world I strongly suspect, and this has been backed up in further studies, is from too much Yang. Or in the west we may say too much stress.

If you are looking for a more ‘factual’ or western explanation of mindfulness, balance, stress, Yin/Yang, or demystifying East to West philosophy your in the right place. This article is the western science applied to Yin Yang and how it affects the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) which you will learn about in the next minutes. You will also have some action steps to improve your own balance and awareness.

I just read this story for the second time. Only this time from a different book.

It was Daniel Goleman latest book written with the Dali Lama, A Force for Good. Highly reccommended for building compassion and depth of understanding.

It was through Daniel Goleman  that I first started ‘formally learning’ about Emotional Intelligence. After reading just one book I got hooked and ever since have been focused on developing Emotional Intelligence (and Social Intelligence) in my life and for others.

WARNING: You may get hooked too!


I would really love to share a more in-depth explanation of this and share with you some of the scientific reasoning on how it works and how this is the basis for Yin and Yang.




So looking at the wolves, you may wonder, you may ponder different meanings. And that is the magic of metaphors. You take your own meaning out of it. Since you take out your own meaning, it’s more powerful then simply being told the reason or answer.


The more you think about how you have feel towards the story or metaphor, the more internal or self focused you may become. Through focus comes awareness. So take a moment to really feel the picture above.


I’ve been fortunate to study with some of the best thought leaders known. By chance I read this metaphor by Daniel Goleman and the Dali Lama and a week later I was working through a Emotional Intelligence in Leadership course by Dr. Richard Boyatzis. Last year I also heard Dr Bruce Lipton share similar work. Dr Boyatzis and Dr Lipton shared different stories but from a scientific, highly logical or masculine angle. So what we have is a pile of experts explaining something in various different language patterns and also emphasizing how important this is to individuals and the collective whole.


In Taoism, or Eastern works they say (in very brief words) Yin Yang represents the dualistic nature of life. Yin Yang is also represented in our body/souls. Yin Yang are opposites. In the above picture one is evil one is good which is completely wrong in Taoism. But it may help you understand, one is compassion, peaceful, kind. While the other is non compassion, anger, superiority.  I say it’s wrong in Taoism as the label of evil in western language means something to be avoid and really bad. Sometimes it’s natural and perfectly good to feel anger. Don’t avoid either side, as all sides and emotions make up the whole. Life should be whole rather than dualistic.


Now what I really want to share with you is not about Taoism or Yin Yang. It’s about the Autonomic Nervous System.

Under that light, these wolves form part of larger system. That system could well be labeled the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS). In short, it’s purpose is to regulate the body’s unconscious actions. It is divided into two further systems. The Sympathetic Nervous System (SNS) and the Para-sympathetic Nervous System (PNS).


System 1.
The Sympathetic Nervous System.

It’s primary process is to stimulate the body’s fight-or-flight response. When we undergo stress or anger, this sympathetic nervous system fires up accelerating the heart rate, and constricting blood vessels which increases blood pressure along with a couple of other changes to body. You see with more blood racing out to our arms and legs we are able to run faster or fight more efficiently.

As a consequence, we have less blood in our brain. Our ability to think logically goes down. When fighting with someone or running from an animal you don’t need logic. Run! Fight!

In fact when fighting an instinct takes over not logic.

Another example is when you’re running late, and can’t find your keys. You start stressing, look frantically and then relies there in your back pocket.


System 2.
The Para-sympathetic Nervous System.

The parasympathetic system kicks in through mindfulness, faith, hope, compassion, seeing kids laugh, patting a dog, experiencing joy with friends, having intimate moments with a lover.

When we do these things the parasympathetic system lowers the heart rate, lowers blood pressure, allows more blood to flow into the head. This results further in boosting the immune system. It not only works again but the body goes into recovery mode, rejuvenating, rebuilding the body.

It’s with this system that you’re at your cognitive best. And on every measure done, you’re in a better state.

Sympathetic and parasympathetic divisions typically function in opposition to each other.

This natural opposition is better understood as complementary in nature rather than antagonistic. Hence previously mentioning good and evil as being wrong. They compliment each other and are both necessary in life. Yin and Yang is a break down of the whole. You can’t remove either one. A problem, the problem is to much of either side can bring imbalance.



Now your action. What you need to do is to simply be aware of what nervous system mode you are in. The more you are aware the more you can influence. So I would like to ask you to consciously ask yourself through out the day, where am I? Am I in the stressed sympathetic or relaxed para-sympathetic mode.

When have I been using each system? What could happen if I used the other mode?

In our modern lives we really need to ensure we have our parasympathetic systems kicking in as much as we can. The stress will come in due course, that’s for sure. But don’t put off getting back into balance. If you’re going to be out of balance, consider being out of balance with laughter and compassion so you can bounce back, rather than anger and stress.

A technique for the entrepreneurs, positive leaders or anyone interested in positive psychology.


Have you ever wondered what other people or perhaps society thinks about your strengths? For about $15USD you can complete your own Gullups Strength Finder assessment and be given a breakdown of each of your 5 key strengths.

Recently I reflected on my Strength Finder results. My no.1 strength was Positivity. It made me wonder how can I share it in a much better way than simply a motivational quote by someone famous, put over someone else’s photograph 🙂

From that, I figured that if I could share with you one of the most powerful techniques or strategies, perhaps you can gain a lot more positivity naturally in your own life. However this technique is not limited to simply positivity. It can also assist with cleansing, mindfulness, relaxing, even productivity.

The technique that you are about to learn I’ve called the “Metaphoric Positive Reframe” or MPR.

Anyone can learn to do a MPR and the real big bonus is that this is something that is easily turned into a habit.

Let’s get into it:I remember my first real paid job. I was 14yrs old and the job was on a farm. It was physically really hard work. In fact my boss actually paid me adult wages because it was so tough. And there I was starting my weekend or school holiday on the farm from 6.30am.

The work was as hard as manual labour can get. Naturally I wanted to give up. I hated the heat, the sun, the sweat rolling into my eyes. I couldn’t wait till sunset, but it’s only the early hours in of the day.

In this time I went through numerous psychological processes as one would naturally do. I tried singing to myself. Focusing on what I could buy. Calculating how much money I already earned or would earn. Thinking about other things. None of it really worked for more than a few minutes. But this work went on throughout the whole summer.

In time I created a strategy which was amazing simple and effective. I started to look at things differently. This is what people consider hard work. I’m doing it. I’m succeeding. I can do it. As much as I didn’t like it, the work became symbolic.

This work was making me tougher. This work was helping me become a ‘hard worker’. The farm itself became part of me. As I worked on the farm I was working on my self. I was employed, earning and saving, just as the farm was employing, earning and saving. The work became less about a job and it became part of my development as a young man.

Every time I went to work, I said things to myself like, “I’m building my character. I’m building my empire”. Sometimes I would even repeat this like a mantra.

“I’m building my character. I’m building my empire”.

“I’m building my character. I’m building my empire”.

“I’m building my character. I’m building my empire”.


Another example

A lot of great things come out of South Korea. Gangnam Style or Kimchi may come to mind for you. However personally for me it would be memories of a week in the area of Noonsan learning Maum Meditation. Here they were very clued on to the MPR. They just didn’t call it that.

Students reaching higher levels in their practice would be ‘blessed’ with the option of doing chores like serving food or doing the dishes (for the entire meditation centre). Each of these tasks were given deeper meaning. Washing plates, could be experienced as washing away bad habits. Scraping leftover food into compost bins could be experienced as feeding the garden. Students learned to reframe the task and actually enjoy it. It goes to show that:

  • You can do a MPR on any task.
  • You can turn your whole life into a collection of positive rituals and habits with the MPR method.

Examples of specific MPR’s:

Having a shower, bathing or washing dishes:

Washing away the stress, cleansing, purifying.

Releasing negative thoughts from the mind.

I purify my thoughts and clean my mind to be more successful.

Turning on power, fan or light switches:

Control, ability, influence, helping others

I’m able to positively influence my environment.

I’m in control of my life.

I connect with that which I need to make my body and those around more healthy and comfortable

Waking up:

Realization, waking up, recognition.

I awaken to greater opportunities for success and abundance

I awaken grateful to have slept and appreciate the opportunity to be here today



How can you do this?


1. Pick a regular task. Showering, brushing teeth, cleaning, putting on make up, shaving, catching a subway, riding a bike, setting your daily alarm.


2. Picking a symbolic meaning behind each task. Cleansing, being alive, positive energy, revitalizing, recharging, motivating, contributing.


3. Create a physical reminder to do the MPR when you do the task. For example, put a note on the mirror, a rubber band around a shampoo bottle, a sticker on your bike.


4. Write out your intent, and your mantra. Writing it down makes it planned and repetitive.

Write out your intent: “When I set my alarm, I will stop worrying about the day, I will put the day behind me and rest”.

Write out your mantra: “I’ve put my day behind me, and will enjoy resting now.”


5. Consciously or out nice and loud repeat your mantra at least 3 times while you do the task.


6. Bask in the glory. Yes, I’m doing this! By actually doing this, you are in fact succeeding and adding growth to your day naturally.

One of my clients was asking me about helping them with finding their life purpose. It’s actually a question I encounter regularly and from my experience, it’s a much bigger challenge then it first appears. But once people are more aware of their purpose, pathways to pursue it magically appear. Just like in Martial Arts or The TAO, when the student is ready, the teacher will appear.

For finding your life purpose, don’t stop. Even if you feel you have it at your finger tips, keep looking deeper. Soon your life may just transform. Finding your big WHY is possible. Once on track the hows will reveal themselves. So here are 8 simple tips for you my friend.

8 Simple tips to finding your life purpose:


1. Identify the activities that are meaningful for you.

These are the things that just feel right when you’re doing them, they have purpose and you feel authentic when you’re doing them. ACTUALLY WRITE THEM DOWN. Don’t just think about them. Make a list. At least 5 things that are really meaningful and another 5 that are so so.


2. Identify the things that you enjoy doing, are good at, and something that the world needs.

You may be good at watching TV, but does the world need more TV viewers? Well perhaps TV critics, TV show bloggers… But does the world need more of that? Perhaps the world needs people that are passionate about higher quality TV programs for improving people’s lives.

Are you good with communicating? Helping others through problems? Perhaps even something like cooking (creating). You should feel at your best when you are doing this. It may be something you don’t get paid for. Personally I’ve been very passionate about helping others my whole life. EQ/SQ became passions of mine around 2007 and it wasn’t until 2013 that I started to get paid for it.

When you enjoy doing it, become very good, and you figure out how to create massive value for someone somehow… It’s just a matter of time till there is enough value in what doing that more valued exchanges start to take place.

3. Create a brief statement that ties together what you are good at and what provides you with a sense of purpose.

In finding your life purpose you probably like to end up with a brief mission or vision statement. A short sentence, a paragraph or even a mantra. Ensure it’s memorable, short and to the point. It can be repeated in times of vain or yelled out over and over again in your car on your way to the next business meeting. Tony Robbins talks about this in some of his programs. A leader needs a mission or vision. Your purpose is that mission or vision.

Steve Jobs, had a very clear why. Profits and Apple were by products of his clear why.

4. Check how your statement or mantra supports your current direction.

Are your daily habits and rituals in line with this. How much of your daily life can be nearer to this?

Remember waterfalls start from little streams.

Steve Jobs was a futurist. A dreamer. Highly intuitive. Would he settle for working in a manager role? No! His why drove him to be in a highly intuitive, dreaming, creators role.


5. Develop new insights and skills that help you to live closer and closer to your statement or mantra without creating big changes.

I’ve worked with over 40 clients now, most of them thought they needed to quit their jobs. Many ended up changing their jobs however, many found that quitting wasn’t required.

Us human being have very common human needs. Often these needs are not met. Hence we end up looking to meet them else where in resourceful, or un-resourceful ways. If creativity is a need for you, and you don’t get to be creative, you may feel an unmet need. Rather than quit your job, doing something more creative on the weekends, or even some smaller creativity time or creative task may fill the void.

Helping people become aware of un-met needs, and un-resourceful thinking and habits are one of the primary results experienced through the initial stages of coaching. It all begins with awareness, then little changes (or complete transformation) can occur.


6. Take the time to reflect, savoir the moments and be 100% present.

In finding your life purpose, it’s very important we take the time to reflect. Recognize that sense of internal fulfillment and calmness when you’re doing things you love. Or doing things that assist you to be completely present. Consider a variety of meditation practices.

It’s very powerful and often underestimated. Especially with finding your life purpose or fulfillment.  Meditation retreats, time out at a Kung Fu school or Yoga Camps are a great way to regain balance, composure, reflect and recharge.

Making a big life change is pretty scary. But, you know what’s even scarier?  Regret.”


7. Find ways to spend more time doing the things that link to your purpose, or find ways to link what you do to your purpose.

Can you turn your passion/purpose into a small cash flow system. This may not be evident right away. In 2011 and 2012 I was a NLP Practitioner trying to change the world. I was guiding people through healing and change processes. But I had no idea how to charge or even if I could. I stumbled upon a podcast and discovered a path that lead to becoming a professional and PAID Life/Executive Coach. That training and being able to monetize it meant that I could really focus on my calling. My calling is not to be a Life Coach, but this is part of my journey.

One of my clients has changed her job every year for the past 3 years. She knows her calling and after working in 3 different companies, in 3 different positions, she had learned the skills required to start her own business and has a pile of valuable experiences, good memories and connections from those 3 years.

8. If still required, then look at creating bigger changes.

Despite the previous example, which is a rare case, it still amazes me how quickly my friends in China quit their jobs. I wonder, are the problems they are faced with really going to be solved by changing jobs? Changing jobs regularly if it is for your purpose is great! If changing jobs and changing cities regularly, while not following your purpose is a problem. Perhaps instead of a change of environment, maybe a change in self is required. Perhaps a life overhaul or servicing. Check your self in to see a professional (or even a training) Life Coach to map out your life and purpose. Finding your life purpose is often something best done with help.

You may even find some of your experiences from the past (often between 3-9 years age) may be holding you back from being able to access your best self or cause problems in your relationships. It happens all the time. A coach is great for that. Finding your life purpose while suppressing emotions is a challenge. Finding your life purpose while suppressing childhood trauma or memories of mum and dad constantly unhappy or fighting is certainly a challenge.

If you don’t want to see someone to help you, or you really really want to do it by yourself, perhaps 1 – 3 weeks of Maum Meditation (in Noonsan Korea) or Viapasana Mediation (at temples and retreats all around the world now). Travel by yourself. Time in your religious center if you have one. Finding yourself, your passion, finding your purpose in life is a journey that will change your world forever.

Today, there are a lot of people out there that don’t seem to have the charisma or ability to meet the people they want to meet. Sometimes it comes down to Social Confidence. As our readers are quiet smart and value self development, I thought we would write a little bit about the subject here. Especially for those that care about their communities and want to share a good read.

Good Social Confidence can easily lead to:

  • Improved work relationships,
  • Through meeting new people increased opportunity for sales or networking
  • A dramatic increase in the chances of finding that special person
  • New ideas, concepts, friends and a whole lot more fun.

So who wouldn’t want more of it!

Let’s not talk to much about it, but what about the opposite. I see a lack of Social Confidence regularly and you probably see it too.

Right now, do you believe that the community around you is regularly improving or losing Social Confidence?

Personally, it never ceases to amaze me how common a lack of social skills is. I’ve seen this in most of the countries I’ve visited so far (70+ Countries). Every single week I meet people who struggle to make eye contact, can’t hold down a solid conversation and let’s not get started with Smartphones replacing real life conversation.

Social skills are not something you learn over night or from a smart phone app. People traditionally learned through lots of experience and good guidance but since the creation of TV less and less real life interactions are taking place. Social skills are on the which is the main reason I chose to develop skills in Training & Coaching. This industry is booming, as more and more smart people turn to educated experts for advice.

However I could be wrong.What do you think? Are these skills going down?

Here is a six step process that helped me grow my social confidence and drastically improved my social skills to the point where I was on TEDx twice.



How to improve social confidence.

lets get into it!

1. Talk to strangers, daily.

Talk to everybody! Talk to the security guard, the shop attendants, the delivery people, people anywhere you can. Even if its just hi. This habit of becoming more social and a natural hello to any person is also going to help the common occurrence of “wondering what to say next”. Something that commonly happens when trying to meet the opposite sex. The more you talk to people in your day to day life, the more comfortable you’ll become in these types of situations.

It is a systemic desensitization approach to social anxiety and its effectiveness is evidenced by psychological research. For the majority of people, taking baby steps has proven to be the best way of overcoming social anxiety.

Another reason for doing this, is that you will meet all sorts of people from different walks of life. Doing this regularly is a fantastic way of building a diverse, interesting and larger social circle.

2. Learn to listen effectively.

Seek first to understand. Imagine if every thing that came out of your mouth was twice as wise. How valuable would that be?

That can actually be achieved a process I call

“shut your mouth & listen first”.

First listen with your ears, second listen with your mind. And if you really want to connect, listen with your heart. That’s what some people call, “third level listening”.

Remember, it’s not just verbal, it’s also language patterns, tonality, context based, and we haven’t even got to body language yet. Effective listening can really assist you in connecting with people without even having to think about what to say.


3. Everyone’s favourite topic is the same anyway

Everyone has their own story and their favourite stories. I love talking about myself. You do to. What is your story you like to share?

Think about that for a moment.

What’s your favourite story you love to share?

Perhaps you can prove me wrong, sometimes it happens. Pretty much everyone I ever spoke to across 70+countries I traveled had the same favourite subject. You know what it is, right? It was themselves. They want to talk about themselves.

It’s human nature. Perfectly natural. We like talking about ourselves. Therefore, whenever you want to talk to someone new, just ask them about themselves and fully listen to what they say. Be curious, find out about them. If you listen deep enough and ask the right questions you can learn something from everyone.


4. Don’t worry about what people think of you

Despite what we’re neurologically programmed to do, we actually overdo it. We are supposed to be at least a little concerned about what other people think. That is part of Social or Cultural Intelligence. Part of being in a tribe is behaving to tribe norms. However we often overdo it.

Most of the time, people are paying so much attention to themselves or what’s going on in their life (or phone) that they don’t pay much attention to you. It’s not necessarily a bad thing, it’s just, you’re not that important to them. They have their own concerns. In fact if someone thinks negatively of you, it is more often a reflection of something in their life and not yours. If someone is rude, neglecting or judging, it’s merely some drama in their own life coming out.

When you meet this behaviour, have patience with the person. Remember: the person and the behaviour can be seen as separate things. Focus on your own happiness. Happiness inside will be reflected on the outside.

5. Laugh

The psychological and physical benefits of laughing are often underestimated. If you ever get the opportunity, try checking out Laughing Yoga. I hear it’s a blast. Laughing is one of the best ways to ease stress, anxiety, tension, fear, trauma and the hiccups.

As much as everyone loves a comedian, you don’t have to go that far. Laughing has a way of building connections between people so being light hearted and easy to laugh with is desirable.

Laughing in the context of fear, or lack of confidence is a simple way of reducing hesitation. Laughing at myself, laughing at my own fear of doing something is a gentle way of reframing or rethinking about the fear.

6. Want to really gain confidence?

Go to events where you don’t know anyone, regularly.

This would be one of the best habits for people trying to gain confidence in the steps mentioned above. How to apply tips 1-5 at a new event?

One of the hardest things for me to do after ending my first serious relationship (7 years), was going out by myself afterwards. For me, it wasn’t a choice, I didn’t have friends. However even later after I made some friends, I still practiced and pushed myself to go out alone (+ I was really looking for a girlfriend, not drinking buddies). I’ll never forget moving to a new city, and getting an apartment down town (Spring Hill, Brisbane). I didn’t get the internet put on, so that I would have to walk down to different Internet Cafe’s instead of staying home. After a couple of trips, and not meeting people, I started to detour around places and occasionally go into a bar or cafe. Unfortunately I didn’t know about tips 1-5 so I wasn’t that good, but I was making progress.

This tip is great for, festivals, house parties. A side benefit will be that it will force you to meet new people.


How do you attack a big challenge like Confidence?

The same way you eat an Elephant.

Neuro Logical Levels (or Neurological levels) is one of the most interesting frameworks I have ever seen in the Coaching / Personal Development world. It is in my opion the best NLP Coaching Model to date. 

Regardless if you’re working as a change agent, or looking for change yourself, this will assist you in understanding and gaining a very high level of awareness of yourself and others.

Reading this alone will give you insight. Spending more time with it and revisiting it will bring more. If you practice it, you may find yourself able to recognise or even track conversations as they go up and down the levels. As a agent of change, you may begin to recognise on what level a presented challenge is at, where the deeper challenge is, and if you develop skills in Coaching/NLP with me, you will learn which models/tools/questions to ask to create trance-formation, or rapid change (perhaps both) with a big smile on your face. 


Very brief background: Neuro Logical Levels is a METAPHOR. It was developed by Robert Dilts and is often taught in NLP and non-NLP Coaching Courses. 


Deeper background: Neuro Logical Levels is a controversial but widely used model (and I would say effective model). An extension of Logical Levels or Logical Types which was pre-NLP days. The levels and types were perhaps brought into the NLP world by Gregory Bateson. In his book, Ecology of Mind, (a challenging but enlightening read), Gregory eluded to deeper structures and in my opinion, was on the edge of many great discoveries of the mind. Gregory Bateson assisted the creation of NLP greatly and enthusiastically. He provided support and valuable introductions, like the introduction to Milton Erickson.  Both Gregory and Milton spent time with one of the young NLP students Robert Dilts. Robert like many recognised there was like layers or levels of the mind, perhaps between reality, action, beliefs and Robert brought this model into the world. On a far deeper look at what are logical levels and logical types, this model according to John Grinder, Co-Creator of NLP, is not true to the rules of logical types. I  was training with John Grinder and he showed my class how this model was false and not even a part of NLP. For me personally, military background, results-focused, this model worked a lot for me, I’ll continue to use it, I’ll teach it on Coaching Courses, and NLP Coaching Courses, but I will leave it out of NLP Practitioner and Master Practitioner courses.   



Neuro Logical Levels:

Best NLP Coaching Model (so far)

In the processes of learning, change, and communication there are, metaphorically speaking, natural hierarchies of logical levels. In logical levels, you have sets and subsets. wheels, frame, bumbper, lights, can be parts of a car. Toyota, Ford, Tesla are cars. Cars are a form of transport. What is in and out of the level is upto the creators intentions. The intentions of Robert Dilts in creating this model, I believe was to assist agents of change in learning how to assist/create change.


Robert calls them, Neuro Logical levels as they reflect levels in the way we can process or think about them.

Example, if we are talking about offices in the context of; how noisy the office is, where the office is, how big is the office, how many people could fit in the office. These are all forms of focusing on the environment level.

If we were to talk about someone bullying in the office, coming to work early or late, procrastinating about what to do, etc. This is all forms of focusing on behaviour. Behaviour in the office. 

If we talk about a supervisor instructing staff to work overtime. This could be seen as a supervisor using their capabilities to affect behaviour

Why is the supervisor instructing staff to work overtime? This may draw out some of the beliefs of the supervisor. They believe it’s their role or in their capabilities to instruct staff to change them. They may value, a performance bonus, or efficiency. 

The supervisor, like all of us, has a value system, and perhaps they have a high value for work output. If they didn’t value work, they may not last long at the company. Some supervisors really seem to value, being in charge.

It’s like part of their Identity, a responsible leader.  Perhaps at work, they assume the identity of a responsible leader. And at home, they may play the role or identity of a parent, or lover. 

Spirituality means many things to many people. To our Supervisor, he may consider it a connection to a god, maybe a higher purpose. 

All these words are metaphors, and this model is to assists us to process but don’t get to caught up or stuck in any part. 


The function of each Neuro Logical Level in the hierarchy is to organize the information below it.

Example, a person’s behaviour results in changes to the environment around them. When a person walks into a room, they take up space and regardless of their behaviour, it will always affect the environment. The environment is generally the result of the persons behaviour. If the person regularly displays outstanding, high performing behaviour, you would expect the environment to reflect this.


Changing something on a lower Neuro Logical Level of the hierarchy could, but would not necessarily affect the levels above it. 

Example, if a person is regularly depressed, very messy, has disorganised behavioural patterns, one may imagine that if he changes where he lives, he will still have those behaviours. It could affect his behaviour. He could suddenly become excited, happy and organised if he was placed on Hawaii. However, his old behaviours were there for a reason. Those old reasons could still be present.

The problem as Einstein said, “You can’t solve the problem with the same thinking that created it.”

Often I see people that suffer from procrastination attempt to fix it with behavioural changes. I congratulate them on trying and have compassion for them as it won’t work. I see this all the time. People struggle to complete tasks, so they form new tasks! Only this time they add an exclamation mark or write IN CAPITAL LETTERS. I’ve also seen people struggle with procrastination buying online courses or books on productivity and sadly (perhaps obviously to everybody else) not finish them. The book or course may on the same level, behaviours, or it may be working on a level above the problem, here that would be capability. To avoid procrastination forever, (a rather simple feat if you know how) you have to work on higher levels then the problem hence the top-down approach used by most expert coaches/agents of change.

Making changes using a top-down approach.

Example, take a disorganised person and help them develop multi-tasking, scheduling, and organisational skills. This might work, only we may be taking on the challenge at the same level or slightly higher.

Making a change at the upper levels changes everything below it in order to support the higher level change. However working one level above the problem isn’t enough. The disorganised person, can still show a lot disorganised behaviour. Here the ‘Disorganised person’ is not a capability factor. Its part of their identity. The person may have grown up all their life being a disorganised person and no amount of capability changes will alter their behaviour if that behaviour is part of their identity. That’s like trying to move a tent, but the tent pegs are still in the ground.

If we work with the disorganised person on the level of Identity. And say, the Identity of the person is shifted and they see themselves as an efficient, successful person, the Values shift too. If something like,  ‘Organised’ or ‘Being Organised’ becomes a high value, than the beliefs, capabilities and behaviour is also modified as a result.

Remember the following:

  • Spirituality – Change for whom and/or what purpose?
  • Identity – Does change reflect who I am?
  • Values and beliefs- Why make the change?
  • Capabilities and Skills- Change how?
  • Behaviours – Change what?
  • Environment – Where to change?


An insight into how I create my magic.

Honestly guys, 70% of what I do with people is work on the higher Neuro Logical Levels. This may be obvious, however often it’s done unconsciously. I may ask questions to someone about their challenge, then perhaps appear to ask unrelated questions about other things. These questions may lead to them focusing on the details of some of the biggest challenges they have accomplished. Then switch back to the challenge they were having currently and suddenly, they identify with the challenge differently. Suddenly, it’s not as big any more. So there you go and you can see how that can be very effective and also done without awareness.

What I really love is the amount of times I speak with someone, feel like it was nothing, but then a week later, get a message from them going something like.

“Adrian, you wouldn’t believe what just happened….”

Often people get immediate results, sometimes they take weeks. It’s amazing though how effective it is. And you can do some of this yourself! In fact, many of us are trying to do it ourselves every 1st of January, or on our birthdays. We attempt to redefine who we are with new years/birthday resolutions or simply buying gym memberships. Sadly though, a lot of these changes are just surface. We generally need one of two things.

A near death experience, something tragic, a death in the family or a heart attack, before there is enough leverage to create a deep change.

Someone to work with us and guide/push/pull or cheer us through the process.

As a NLP Coach I often find myself artificially creating heavy leverage to push a person to change. Just the other day I had a participant talk about the hard time he had cutting back sugar. I gave him an artificial near death experience, and guess what? It suddenly became much easier for him to say no to sugar. In fact when I spoke to him 7 days later he had cut back his Sugar content 80-90% and was on top of the world.


Now that you have learned this:

Instead of listening deeply in every conversation, try listening briefly and keep an eye on the Neuro Logical levels. Now you should be able to identify which level the conversation is on. In this article, we are going to cover the basics of NLP Anchoring. Perhaps you will get some insight to how to improve or use this in your daily life. By the end you will know the various forms of anchors and how you can set one.


What is NLP Anchoring (or a Anchor in Coaching talk)?

An anchor is a stimulus that creates a response in either you or in another person. It could be as simple as a stop sign or a word.

When an individual is at a peak of an experience, during an intense. emotional state, and if a specific stimulus is applied, a neurological link is established between the emotional state and the stimulus. As Dr Joe Dispenza likes to say, Neurons that fire together, wire together. And with NLP we wire that neural activity to a anchor such as the stop sign or word.

Some anchors span each of our representational systems (or senses) and these are generally more powerful then using just one system. Often I’ll meditate and prior to starting use a little oil or incense to anchor / prepare mentally for the coming meditation.

We develop good and bad anchors automatically throughout our lives. Often people ask me to work with removing anchors even though they have no idea of that language. NLP Coaching or training will help enable you to identify and choose anchors while for most people it’s completely unconscious.

A great anchor is ‘used against us’ when they have comfort breaks in the middle of the film at the cinemas. As soon as you walk into a cinema it’s pretty hard to not notice the smell of popcorn. Even people that don’t normally eat popcorn often find themselves buying it the cinemas.

Greater or more mischievous anchors commonly exists in romantic and family relationships. If you are already in a relationship you may like to talk to a NLP Coach about collapsing anchors that already exist in your relationship.

Keys to effective anchoring

  • Intensity of experience. Make sure that the intensity of the experience is high.
  • Timing of the anchor.  Apply the anchor when the intensity of the experience is at its highest.
  • Uniqueness of the stimulus.  Use a part of the body that is not normally touched eg Knuckle.
  • Replication of the stimulus.  Reapply the stimulus repeatedly to ensure that the anchor is firmly embedded into the neurology.
  • Number of times. Test the anchor repeatedly to exercise the neural pathway.

You can generate visualauditorykinestheticolfactory, and gustatory anchors.  The least preferred representational system of a person is the one that it is most powerful to use with them as it is the one that you are most sensitive to.


Steps in NLP Anchoring

  1. Recall a past vivid event, experience.
  2. Anchor – provide a specific stimulus.
  3. Change state.
  4. Test (Place the stimulus) – Evolve the state.


Example Exercise: Anchoring the feeling of confidence.

  1. Recall a time when you felt really confident.  When you think of that time do you have a picture?  Get that picture.
  2. When you notice the picture place a finger from one hand on the knuckle of the other hand (remember which knuckle you selected!).  Release the finger after a maximum of 20 seconds or earlier if you get the sense of the picture or feeling leaving you.
  3. Change your state by looking out of the window or smelling the air in the room that you are in.
  4. Replace your finger on the knuckle and notice for that feeling of confidence returning.




NLP Resource Anchor

An anchor for when you want to boost energy, confidence, motivation, or any other powerful state of being. One that you do for yourself. Pray is a great example.


NLP Stacked Anchor

A number of anchors stacked together to increase intensity of the required state. Sometimes I have my clients creating a stacked anchor for excellence. Here we may stack confidence, excitement, fun, humour and compassion on top of each other. Next we an anchor this to a convenient stimulus like rubbing a ring while saying quietly “I can do anything with compassion”.


NLP Chaining Anchors

Sequential process of moving to a significantly different state.

Useful for when a client has a significant difference between their present state and the desired state. Each state builds on the one before until the desired state is reached.


NLP Collapse Anchor

Replacing a negative anchor with a positive one for the same stimulus. 

(Great for nasty relationships and bad habits)


NLP Search Anchor

An anchor used to identify the source of a problem or issue.

(Great for personal development and certain types of meditation)

Ok, now you have a good knowledge base, time for you to create your own Anchor for excellence or perhaps a powerful stacked anchor. Once you have created one, it’s up to you to build it up and make it more powerful and more useful through practice.

If life was a garden

Recently I was asked by a client in Shanghai about removing negative thought patterns. In fact, I’m kinda asked this a lot however not always so directly. 

Removing negative thought patterns:

One might wonder how good it would be to remove your negative thought patterns however there is a bit more to it then simply just loosing it. If they were removed, what would take its place. One might imagine there could be a vacuum, or an abscence. Since ever action has a reaction. Or every effect, has a cause.

I like to imagine it like a garden.

Hence The Garden Metaphor.

If life was a garden, what would you want to grow?

It’s a simple and effective metaphor to a successful life. Pull out the weeds, grow beautiful plants.

1. Love and warmth
2. Appreciation and gratitude
3. Curiosity
4. Passion
5. Devotion
6. Confident
7. Flexible
8. Cheeky Vibrant Excited
9. Healthy energetic
10. Helping others, fulfilled

We also call these plants, Power Emotions.
Powerful emotions which fuel us and give us strength. Wouldn’t it be great to be feeling these emotions everyday!

Sometimes there are weeds in my garden.  Sometimes there is anger, exhaustion,  sadness.

Removing negative thought patterns:

It’s ok to want to pull these weeds out. Our society often sees them as bad or negative but we need to realise that bad or negative are judgements. Generally people percieve judging as bad, yet we are quick to judge bad or negative emotions. Perhaps we should call these, less plesant emotions. And we need to realise that we couldn’t exsist without them. They form part of the circle of life. However they are part of the circle, and certainly shouldn’t be experienced in excess. 
So we need to recognise these emotions are here for a reason.
Sometimes we pull one out and another grows quickly in its place. Especially if the ground is bare.

You wouldn’t pull out all the weeds and just leave it bare would you? No you would pull them out and quickly replace them with plants or weedproof matting. And good gardeners know, there is no such thing as weed proof. Only weed resistant. So I look at the weed before I pull it out. It’s grown there for a reason.  Why is that.  Oh, I need more beautiful plants or perhaps its time to plant some flexibility or devotion.

In order to remove the weeds effectively, what if instead of focusing on the weeds, we were to do our best to grow strong beautiful plants which will bear fruit and seeds for more beautiful plants. Slowly, or perhaps quickly one could end up with a beautiful garden, perhaps so beautiful that any remaining weeds are barely noticed or a problem anymore.

Fill your life like a beautiful garden.  Appreciate that weeds are as natural as flowers. I’m sure if you keep a focus on this trying to remove negative thought patterns will be a thing of the past.

Hi there, this article was originally written for my female friends in Shanghai. This is extremely relevant to women and perhaps men everywhere however I wrote it for Shanghai women in particular because this city is simply so dry on available men, and so full of amazing women. We are going to dive deep and fast into one of the biggest problems single people need to face.

What I’m going to share with you could well be one of the biggest keys for successful dating that most coaches without adequate training would easily miss. It looks kind of simple, it sounds kind of simple, it could be simple. Perhaps being aware of it, could be the start of a big change for you.

Thank you for taking the time to read this. It shows you are already open minded and able to look at things from different angles. It’s important that you keep your mind open as I’m wondering, are you aware of what’s really holding you back?

Go on take a guess. Or pull out the excuse you normally use. And perhaps it’s true. Looking deeper we are all faced with similar fundamental fears.

Deeper down you may be a little bit or perhaps shit scared of being alone. Not being good enough. Perhaps not having children and hitting late 30’s. After coaching many women through this, I’ve picked up a thing or two. These fears are extremely common and the problems are different, but the underlying human behavior is like a code. The code is the secret. Deep down, we are all running on autopilot. Reacting to everything that happens quickly or predictably based on the past rather than based on the future. It’s human nature. But we can all do better.

Now you made the choice to come here, you’re looking for the more success, therefore the next question is….


Is there a science to successful dating?

Firstly, to make it really happen for you in the dating and relationships game, you may want to consider learning more about this code. Think, if you could decode your behaviour, or someone elses behaviour, you could do so much more. The self awareness, ability to influence, to capture a heart really expands.

With new self awareness people tend to start to pick up on their fears and this is one of the first places for change to take place.

There needs to a letting go of one or more of the three fundamental fears. Letting go of the fundamental fears is like jumping into the deep end of a pool for the first time.  Do you know what these fundamental fears are?

Any Idea?

Honestly, it’s pretty easy to be told or to read what they are and you will in a minute, however you really need to take it in slowly and on a deep level. This is serious stuff and really connecting to the message will assist you in your journey where ever your are in it!

The biggest thing holding you back is most likely to be one or a blend of these three fundamental fears:


  • Fear of not being loved.

OMG. What if no one loves you?

What if you try so hard and end up single.

Will your parents love you if no one else will?

Think about a little dog for a minute. Now the owner ignores the dog for a long time. Or a child.


  • Fear of not belonging.

We are human beings. We come from a family.

We have a deep sense of needing to belong. We did for survival.

Humans came out of caves and created societies. There is a fear of getting kicked out or dis owned.


  • Fear of not being enough.

Your approaching 30 or 40, your single, what do your parents think of you?

Well your parents probably and should love you. But still we fear not being enough.

Our entire upbringing was a struggle and constant series of developments to be enough.

What if we aren’t good enough?



I urge you to read them again slowly, and consider how you ‘do’ each fear. Do you ignore it, steam roll over it, or does it affect you a bit more than that?

It’s absolutely normal to have these fears, they are natural.

However they naturally and for some dramatically, hold us back!

Constantly I see men, wanting to approach a pretty woman, but he can’t. If she rejects him, he fears ‘not being loved’, being laughed at or not belonging to his or the greater society circles. The man also has to be concerned, is he good enough.

The same situation applies for women.



How do you react to these fears and which ones do you relate to most?

If these fears did not resonate with you, think about it from a logical detached point of view (as in, get out of your own head, heart, ego and pride zone).

What would someone that feared not being love do?

What characteristics would they posses?

What kind of things would they do?

Do you know any friends that are like that?

Do you do any of that?

Repeating the procedure, with what would someone that feared not belonging, not belonging to their family, social circle, belonging with others.

How about someone that feared not being enough. Not being enough to others, not being enough to themselves.

What would be the signs of these fears, do you know anyone that clearly has the signs or fear? Do you do any of that?

It’s most likely you do! It is very unlikely you don’t.


The true effect:

Think about it. Two people very very similar. One is afraid of not being loved, belonging or not being enough. The other person is aware of their fear, minimized it, and has strategies in place to counter act it. They may even appear or actually become fearless. Who would you rather be with?

Personally I still feel these fears at times. In fact, years ago, I felt them a lot! I learned to how to manage fear and you can too. With or without relationship coaching these fears can be identified in most people.


How I deal with it:

For me, I found that awareness helped a lot. Now days, I’m much more in tune to my body and emotions. I feel this fear coming on. Generally I see, hear or know something is coming. Or perhaps it’s just a thought in my dead. Then I feel the fear growing and wait, hang on, that’s fear!

Then I ask myself. Why is that feeling there? Where is it coming from? Is it doing me any good? Realistically, looking at myself from a third person perspective, should I, or is there any real purpose in feeling fear. Perhaps its silly, perhaps its acceptable. Most frequently it doesn’t really serve me well and I want to minimize it. So I acknowledge the fear, then work on moving straight through. Moving how? One step after the next. Realizing the fear is silly, laughing at it, re-framing it, or just forcing myself to continue focusing on positive aspects. If you keep focusing on positive aspects, you will keep seeing and feeling those positive aspects. You can do this too!

Short Cut:

Now that you have learned this, you should find yourself with a lot more awareness and options for overcoming challenges. If you really want to overcome fears and challenges. Consider working with a qualified coach or even a new coach in training. This is a free blog write up, you didn’t pay for it and, sure, you can access or find much more. So why would you want to pay for a course or for full access to all the materials on my site? Or why would someone pay to access your site, for your advice or to hear you speak.

There is a good answer to this question. It’s good to understand how Charging or Charging more adds value to your product.


1. When you pay for something, it has a lot more value.

Two people are running courses on selling something. One is free and the other is normally $400 per day, but discounted for you and available at $250 per day. Which course do you think has more value?

I’ve seen lots of free courses advertised; 1-2 day workshops. Half the time you are there, they are trying to sell a product. They give you a little bit of free content, just a little bit, and their success stories. Therefore, you have to go to the paid event to get anything useful.  I’ve also seen paid courses; 1 day to 1 year long courses loaded with support and materials.

I wrote a blog some time ago too and read a similar blog by Seth Godwin. Seth spoke about how a $70 bottle of wine tastes better than a $7 bottle of wine. There was even a study done where price tags were switched, suddenly the cheap wine tasted better. Now that became a fact. What we make from it is that people expect the $70 wine to taste better.


2.  Attachment           

When exchanging money or time for something you become more attached to it. You invest in it. Hence, you want to get more from it.

Let’s change the wine for a movie. Paying for a movie at a theatre is not the same as watching a movie on the TV at home. It’s not just about the popcorn; you can make that at home. There is a different connection to a movie in a theatre. For starters, you plan it, you look forward to it. Your expectations are higher and you invest in it. Additionally, you maintain your mobile at the silent mode, you don’t talk when it starts and you are paying for it. So, you are focused. You’re more engaged. Afterwards, you may even get on Facebook and tell your friends about it.

What’s of more value to you?

  1. A free MP4 series on meditation, or paying to attend a packed out meditation session with the Dalai Lama.
  2. Reading a book about the Bible or Koran or having one on one time with a Priest or Sheikh.
  3. Attending a free seminar about stock trading / property dealing, or attending a talk by Warren Buffet or Donald Trump.
  4. Reading Blogs on a free website about improving something, or getting a manual, audio series, and step by step guidance check sheets on how to improve that same thing.


Knowing this should help you if you are selling something. Or consider buying some mentoring or educational products.

Paying for courses, seminars, workshops that align to your wants, needs, desires can be so beneficial. Reading free blogs by people that haven’t achieved what you are trying to achieve doesn’t take you far.

If you are serious about where you are going and have your direction, strongly consider paying for good mentoring or good hands to help assist you on your journey. There is no need to go it alone when you can be achieving so much more. Remember, once you have heavily invested in your direction, the path will become clearer and more solid. Also, you will reap the benefits of having invested in that journey.

I don’t know a single person who has succeeded without investing heavily in himself.  The only way to succeed is to invest in yourself and your chosen journey…you must be willing to make the investment!

For those that who don’t know, I’m one of the most experienced Couch Surfers in Australia and China (where I spend half my time). I’ve met thousands of members and stayed in over a hundred houses with over a hundred people being accommodated with me in my house. This has given me a fantastic opportunity to learn and share with people all around the world.

Since 2007 I’ve been studying Emotional Intelligence and later NLP Neuro Linguistic Programming. NLP is often used for coaching others to success or adjusting psychology/influence to get positive results. I feel that this could be modified to:

“Everyone is doing the best they can with the resources they think they have available.”


Well now your getting a grip on what Coaching is, you know I and other Coaches often offer some free coaching so logically, your resources have just increased no matter what your circumstances are.


Now lets see this in action with an example of some NLP Coaching in Kuala Lumpur with my good friend/client Chen.

Chen doesn’t pay me directly, and originally we were just friends however we created this Mentor-Student-Coaching relationship.

Chen has a strong desire to improve his dating and has read a couple of books about picking up girls, or dating as a polite way to say it. I also read a couple of books about dating and became so good at it, that I ended up with countless girlfriends across Europe/Asia. It’s unbelievable how easy and rewarding dating can be when one has a deep understanding of them selves, others and communication.

Now Chen sees this as an opportunity to ask questions and sort out some of his thoughts. “Is this dating stuff in the books for real? Does it work?”

I’m sitting opposite Chen nodding up and down. “Yes mate, it certainly CAN work. It can be amazing when you figure it out. You can find what you are looking for!”

Chen has one big problem holding him back. (This is pretty good, normally people have much more, or we are just looking at one issue here now):

“I’m Malaysian Chinese man! No girl wants to date me, just look at me,” said Chen.

Chen is an average character, not really good looking but certainly not ugly. He has a non-athletic with Chinese appearance. Chen believes girls don’t find this attractive and this is the reason why he can’t get a date. In fact Chen even told me many Malaysian Indian guys were doing better than him and when he saw them succeeding with girls from his university he got even more stressed. Chen firmly believed that he couldn’t get a date because he is of Chinese appearance .

This is what we call a “Limiting Belief”. Some people think it’s there teeth, their lack of confidence or alpha status. Some think it’s an ability to connect or not knowing what to say.

“I’m Malaysian Chinese man! No girl wants to date me, just look at me.”


There are many techniques for changing or blowing  out a Limiting Beliefs. For Chen’s limiting belief I went at it from two angles. Firstly challenging, secondly re-framing. These are the kind of questions I asked:   (Please note, this came from Chen at the time. There not my beliefs!)

  • What’s the problem? – I’m Chinese. Girls don’t want to date Chinese
  • How is that really a problem? – Girls don’t like Chinese.
  • Don’t they? Says Who? – Everyone knows it.
  • Why is that?  – Because Chinese is not good enough and not attractive.
  • Why is that? – Chinese don’t do attractive things. We don’t look masculine or fit.


The thing here is that for Chen, he believes that Chinese guys are unattractive. There is nothing actually wrong with him, just his self-image.

Secondly, we worked on re-framing the situation with some NLP techniques and after 30 minutes this is what we got from Chris.

“Ordinary Chinese are not physically attractive to most western women and I can use this to my advantage. Women won’t suspect or see me coming! They can judge me however they want. And if they judge me poorly, I can use it to my advantage! it will be even easier to sweep them off their feet! I can talk to them easily, confidentially and friendly.”

“I’m not really masculine or strong, but I’m not fat. I’m actually pretty healthy.”

“The real reason I haven’t had much success is that I thought I wasn’t good enough. I’m definitely good enough for a great woman and I will concentrate more on reinforcing a better self image!”

 Done. Limiting belief challenged and re-framed positively!


Six months later, I went past Malaysia and visited Chen again. He looks like a new man. He put on a few Kilograms of muscle. He had been going to the gym because he has become genuinely interested in his health and fitness. He even had a big thick book with him about Men’s Health and was reading ALL of it. It was fantastic to see his new passion and zest for life.


Twelve months later, I passed again and Chen now lives a very healthier lifestyle, attends a weekly Salsa event where he is making himself known for spinning the women around on and off the dance floor. Chen is no longer dating as he has himself a great girlfriend from Finland.

Just a couple of directed, well worded questions helped Chen see things from a new angle which lead to him being a much better person and ultimately finding a dream Girlfriend. It doesn’t always work like out like. Well, it more often does. But be aware, some things are un-coachable. Just hit the contact button and ask away though. How to hire a coach may seem simple but it’s often not. So this is an article for those looking at hiring me or any coach. Here I will share how to hire a coach, and valuable insights. Really upfront and honest is my favourite approach to most things in life. 

Spending money on yourself is one of the best investments you can make provided you are likely to get a good return. Investing in books or online courses can be great investments if you action what you read and really implement it. Although people are often telling me reading or online courses rarely get them long term results. Often people suffer procrastination and fear of actually pursuing big goals, therefore for those people, buying more literature can be another form of procrastination. A way to keep busy, keeping up the appearance of progress meanwhile avoiding the tough questions we often need to ask ourselves.


I believe you can, but if you could, you already would.  


There are various types of coaching and just briefly, I see life coaching as the basis. The most abstract. Business, Executive, Relationship, Leadership Coaches as those focusing in on the specifics. In my opinion, one should start abstract, grasp a solid big picture, build a solid foundation, then focus in on the specifics in a logical highly effective sequence. It’s pointless focusing on a relationship, business or role that doesn’t fit with your values or lead to your mid-long term objectives.  


How to hire a coach: ROI, Return On Investment?

Good coaching should ideally give you a return at least 5 times the size of your investment. Just as surfing lessons initially cost, but save you tons of time (and potentially save you from getting dumped hard on a shallow reef and breaking your back). 

It’s obviously hard to measure the value of being …… Fulfilled. Or satisfied with life…

There have been countless studies by the International Coaching Federation (ICF) showing the returns. One client of mine went from a break-up in a mismatched relationship to getting engaged with a great match in 6 months. Another recently made his first million. Many have changed jobs/careers. Some have saved their relationship. One is about to take list their company on the stock market. 


How to hire a coach: Do people regret coaching? 

Honestly, I think some do. I hear this a lot and 95% of the time the coaches were not accredited. The ICF is the worlds largest coaching body, however, anyone can call themselves a coach or author, motivational speaker, CEO, founder etc. My 3-year-old daughter can claim all those titles whenever she comes back from daycare. 

Many self-proclaimed coaches, guru’s, experts have had little to no specific training. To me, these many of these untrained coaches are like washed up surf bums selling themselves at the tourist carpark pretending they are pro’s. They could have possibly been pro’s. Often you can recognise them by a Bali or beachside video or selfies next to a sporst car…..

If you are a coach, simply ask to see their Linkedin profile and ICF Accreditation (My Linkedin profile is here). This will dramatically reduce the chances and the ICF also provides an avenue for any problems if it falls apart. I see a lot of complaints about coaches after attending events like Tony Robbins. The complaints are always unaccredited coaches.

How to hire a coach: What to look for? 

  • Training. A great coach is often trained in NLP. They should have a Practitioner, Master Practitioner or NLP Trainers Certificate.  This is a core set of skills which lead to accelerated results. (Tony Robbins is a high-level expert in NLP, note he also sells some of the cheapest training available online however his certifications are not really valued much outside of his fan base) 


  • ICF (International Coaching Federation) Accreditation. ICF is the worlds biggest coaching body. There are many cheap online courses and books available on coaching but to get the ICF credential is quite some work. There is strict credentialing procedures so few make it all the way. If Coaches make it through you will see them using the ICF logo and one of the following 3 levels ACC, PCC, or MCC. Please note there is also the EMCC (European Mentoring and Coaching Council) which is the European equivalent, only applicable for coaches focused on or with Europeans. I personally went out and got this as maybe half of my online clients are European and I look forward to running training in Europe towards 2020. 


  • Ideally, the coach should have a background or understanding in those things you’re striving for. They do not need experience in your industry. That could be a roadblock. What is optimal is if they have helped support others through the challenges you are faced with. 


  • Money Back Guarantee. I often offer a money back guarantee on the condition that the person being coached, turns up. No turning up, no refund. Often clients may struggle and it wouldn’t be fair to offer a such a simple way out. Imagine if gyms did this! Therefore my money back guarantee is simply based on the client turning up regularly. No one gets results going to the gym once a month. Subscribe to a set of sessions, turn up weekly or fortnightly, results guaranteed. 


  • A track record of successful clients.  This track record should be open and publicly displayed on Linkedin. Yes I’m sure there are some good coaches without Linkedin but really, is your serious about what you do your profile should reflect it. Please note, it’s common for many people to play the fake it game. Hence why I always encourage Linkedin. Also note, many new coaches can and will work happily for a low fee to gain experience and develop.


A final quick and simple sign for a good coach or a good doctor for that matter, the first call is substantial.

How to hire a coach: But I don’t have a budget.

Seeking a coach is a great form of investment in yourself yet most people don’t have the budget for it.


I’ll tell you who. They worlds top performers, athletes and executives do. Successful small, medium, big, business owners, CEO’s and partners often do.

But you probably don’t.

That’s ok, it’s not your fault.

Did you go to university? Do you know how much people spend on attending university? Often they can’t afford it, but they find a way.

After all, spending xxx,xxx on University plus x years studying. Suddenly investing in your own coach is something you can’t afford not to do.

You spent x years studying. X years working. Why not spend 1 year with a coach focused on working for you!

Can you really afford NOT TO BE WORKING ON YOUR IMPROVING YOUR OWN LIFE. Instead of ‘How to hire a coach’, perhaps it should have been called ‘How can you not have a coach’. 



How to hire a coach: My costs as at November 2017.

For an ICF PCC level coach with Masters in NLP, the standard company rate in China varies from ¥3000-6000 per hour. For most of my clients this is simply too much so I have highest to lowest cost below.  

My preferred way of working is ¥88,000 or $13,888 USD for a full year. This covers EVERYTHING for the year including calls to my team! My Relationships Coach and Mindfulness Coach will be available for you. NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming):

A science, approach, attitude and methodology behind communication, personal development and success. 

To put it most simply, have you ever been at university and thinking, OMG this is so theoretical, when do we get to actually do stuff?

Well one psychology student back in the 70’s had the same question. He was working for a world-famous therapist, Fritz Pearls. While he was transcribing the work of Fritz Pearls, he learned a lot and began teaching other therapist at his university. These new therapist were getting results and the Student approached one of the new professors, a Linguist to join him. The Professor was a linguist. He had learned multiple languages and had previously served in the military on very very special top secret operations. The Professor and the student combined efforts. They put linguistic frameworks around what this world-famous therapist was doing. They continued to study and make models on other famous therapists such as Virginia Satir and Milton Erickson. Together, they decoded the magic and went on to teach thousands of people around the world the magic. In fact, their first books were called The Structure of Magic I & II.  

Another recollection of the events, which I personally enjoy, highlighted how the Student, had a second question. 

In psychology, we are always studying what goes wrong in people. Why don’t we study what makes people great instead?

And this question is how I like to see NLP. Not as a tool for therapy, which it is great for, but as a tool, methodology to help people be great. A way of learning and clarifying, whats the difference between what makes someone good, and someone else great!

Fast forward to 1990’s and there I was, a young teenager studying wealth creation books. I had no idea of NLP yet I was doing my own process of learning whats the difference that makes the difference between poor and rich. Rich and super rich. 

What if you could learn what they learned? What if you could, and you could, couldn’t you, be open to learning more,  now. 

This process I was doing as a teenager is a less disciplined approach of what the creators of NLP did.  They had a far more rigorous and structured approached. 

Their approach became known as NLP Modelling. Modelling was the process that the student used to ‘be like’ or ‘act as if’ he was Fritz Pearls. This process evolved far more with the professor and further studies.

Through Modelling a trail of techniques, strategies, beliefs were formed. Some even say NLP is an attitude. An attitude towards learning and sharing excellence. Some say NLP is the study of Excellence. 

Now the student, Richard Bandler, and the professor, John Grinder, are still alive and well today. They went on, bringing more people into the studies. The original group became known as the ‘Meta Kids’ They studied many of the best coaches, psychotherapist, family counsellors, healer and more. One student, Robert Dilts, later went on to study people like Mozart and Leonardo Da Vinci. A student of a student, perhaps of a student, was a business consultant. The business consultant saw the power of NLP and created his own version, shorter, easier to sell, less complex, taught by slides over a couple of days with a ‘one size fits all’ approach. This student trademarked some of the original work from Fritz Pearls as ‘Time Line Therapy’. This was my first experience learning NLP in a class room environment. It was very much like a classroom only the content was fantastic! I realised as I exceeded and continued learning that this ‘Time Line Therapy’ was ….. Not wrong, but largely fluffed up with long unnecessary scripts. Anyhow this is probably the most common form of NLP in Australia. Richard Bandler is still teaching in the USA and UK. His may be the most common there. And John Grinder, the Professor is the one who I hope to study under next! I look forward to sharing when that happens. 

So NLP studied the greats and created formulas that you and I can learn. 

Fast forward to 2010-2020 NLP is a key skill for Coaches, Therapists, Communicators, Public Speakers. 

NLP Coaching is used by high-level executives, business people, and athletes to give them a major competitive advantage. NLP Coaching is for normal to smart people wanting to get more out of life, better results, or win. (Not to be confused with Psychology which is roughly focused on labelling what goes wrong and helping people be more normal). I learned this, loved it, helped hundreds of people experience exponential growth steps, and YOU CAN TOO.

  • NLP is a discipline that studies the connections between an individual’s ways of receiving information through the nervous system (Neuro = visual, auditory, touch, smell, taste), its ways of communication (Linguistic = pictures, sounds, feelings, smells, tastes, words) and its patterns of behavior or emotions (Programming = neurological pathways / maps of thought / outcomes).
  • NLP is an efficient approach in changing the way an individual thinks or acts toward someone or something and this can be utilized to achieve success in almost all aspects of life (personal, professional, family, business and finances, and almost everything). For example, we could look at the NLP strategies behind Bill Gates, Michael Jordan, Dali Lama (in fact this has already been done) and then we can utilize some of their strategies or tactics in our life.   • NLP is for the mind is like a mechanic for your car. As the mechanic has expertise and passion for the car system, a NLP practitioner has expertise and passion for the mind.

I just came back from NLP Trainers Training with John Grinder, the Professor who became the Co-Creator of NLP. WOWWWWWW!!!!!

Such a pleasure to experience his training first hand. I was blessed to have a few brief conversations with him. It has given me amazing insights and he has certainly continued developing NLP. His latest work is called ‘New Code NLP’. I’m certified at Master Prac Level in New Code and I can now offer Practitioner Level Certificates in NLP. After spending a lot of time in Buddhist countries and reading a lot about spirituality taught me to focus on the present with what’s happening right now! Well, OK I tried that… and sometimes it’s SOOOO IMPORTANT However, focusing on the future is important, if not more important.

Focusing on the present has it’s benefits. Sometimes it often misleads you to fulfill or chase your short term desires and cravings .

Just imagine yourself after a work out or long jog. Feeling hungry and looking at a restaurant window seeing an advertisement for a big steak with chips and gravy. Hmmmm…  tempting and your hungry. Yet if you wait till you get home, maybe you could cook a cheaper, healthy alternative. And wash it down with a nice big glass of free cold water instead of Coke.

Being present may draw us to living and loving life.  Focusing on the future however may draw us to living and loving a healthier, and  more abundant life.

  • Planning for your abundance.

Planning and envisioning what you really want 10 years from now is a sure way to help success flow into your life.  If you already know what you want in life, wouldn’t you save a lot of time to start moving directly in that direction, or at least indirectly in that direction? For example, Do you want to have healthy fit lifestyle in 10 years time? Think about it…  Personally, I don’t just want to be healthy and fit, I demand that I be healthy and fit. I will be! and  I envision it! I see my self going rowing, cycling and jogging on a regular basis when I’m older.

  • The 10,000 hours Theory

Some people say becoming really good at something takes 10 years of work. That is where 10,000 hour theory comes in. It is investing 3 hours a day to develop an expertise. 3 hours x 365 day x 10 years = 10,950 hours (I guess if you have a few days off every now and then 10,000 hours)
Do you want to be the leader in your current job? Or perhaps the leader in the industry? Do you spend extra time studying or becoming really good at something? What do you want to be excellent at? Is it inline with your craft and long term goal?

  • 10,000 Hours of hard work = EXCELLENCE

Its not just 10,000 hours. Its 10,000 real hours. not 10,000 half-arsed working while talking on Facebook hours. Perhaps, even less hours of working/studying more effectively then the norm. Studies have also shown there is much more knowledge retained and skill developed by breaking up the hours into more workable chunks. I.e. 5 x 2 hour blocks are much more efficient than 1 x 10 hour block. For me, I do a 50 minute blocks of focused work with all distractions eliminated. After 50 minutes or perhaps a bit longer, I move and  check my phone or something else. Then I move on to the next block.

Regular manageable blocks allow your skill, passion and mastery to develop. Imagine if you do blogging, writing, working out, investing, or a sport for 3 hours a day for 10 years. I am sure you would be excellent at it. (Make sure your time is spent doing something worth being excellent at).

  • Delayed gratification

Lastly, the skill of delayed gratification is one of the ultimate keys to success. Without delayed gratification, one simply cannot achieve true success. Delayed gratification is the planting of  the seeds. Its the patience to wait till the fruit is ready to be picked.  They say money doesn’t grow on trees, well that’s funny, because fruit certainly does and some fruit isn’t cheap.

Delayed gratification takes many forms. In romance, waiting till the third date for that first kiss. In education, saying no to paid work to study for higher paid, more rewarding work later.  In health, using the stairway instead of the elevator. In business, going the extra mile.



Planning ahead, persistence, self-discipline and the ability to delay gratification are the keys to the brightest future you could possibly dream of. Good thing comes to those who put in the hard yards and are patient. However, we should be careful we put in the hard yards in the right direction. And, make that YOUR DIRECTION, not your employers.

It’s the simple TRUTH.  We all like to do so many things, all at once. Especially the driven, creative or motivated individuals. However we have to focus and get good results. Like any other skill, it takes practice. And it is true, practice makes perfect. In fact, learning to say no can be the most significant personal, proficient development tool one can have.

  • Will not take on new business opportunities until the current project is finished.
  • Will not check email or social media until 11am in the morning.
  • No eating fried food. No Candy. No softdrinks.
  • No coffee in the morning and at night.
  • No business calls when spending time with family.
  • No work talk at home. No work stress brought home.
  • No complaining and bickering.
  • No postponing gym or exercise!



Saying no over and over again to these things builds up power. The no comes more powerful and we build up strength to fight off the negativity that surrounds us everyday. Fight back and take control of your life. Learn to say no positively!

Some people may say no to this post. They may say focus on saying yes. Yes yes yes. Ok, that may be true. There may be more power in saying yes. Why not try to practice the Art of saying no and see how it goes. Perhaps it may work or it would simply provide some advantages for you.

The other day, I was in a seminar and the presenter was using PPT. The speaker was great, but the power point slide show really put half of the audience to sleep. The speaker also read out the slides word for word. Why say it when you have it up there for the audience to read.

Your presentation should motivate and inspire people, should it not?

You can do better and there is an easy way to do it.

Introducing Prezi Presentation

Its time to update your style and present in unique 21st century ways. Use Prezi Presentation to put in drama and charisma into your presentations!



Prezi is not your usual slide-based presentation tool. Prezi acts as a blank canvas, allowing the user to decide how they’d like to present the whole thing. In relation to PPT, it allows the user to follow a particular “path” through the slides much creatively. It gives the user the freedom to zoom out and look at the bigger picture, all the slides either in a line, in a circle or perhaps in a tree like our example. This zoom feature allows the freedom to zoom into relevant slides to show fine detail or perhaps even multimedia video clips. Perhaps the audience knows some slides very well so instead of boring them or skipping quickly through slides, you can hover over them while partially zoomed in, or skip them altogether easily.



I asked my assistant Yves to figure it out for us. I knew what I wanted so I wrote it out on a giant sheet of paper, simply took a clear high res photograph and hours later Yves had figured it out and changed my paper plan into a Prezi Presentation.

  • PPT is like a book. Pages go in order, 1 2 3 4. With Prezi’s zoom feature, Prezi is more like a map. You can scan over the map and zoom in on any relevant page you like, when you like.
  • Prezi is just getting started, its new and fresh. It adds a new element to your presentation. People will be more interested in what your showing on the screen for this reason alone.
  • Presi is online, easily shareable. On the other hand, you can also use Prezi without having an internet connection by downloading the Prezi Desktop.
  • Prezi is more interactive. With Prezi you can keep clicking the mouse or a key on your keyword to view each part of the presentation.

A mind map is a graphical way to symbolize thoughts and concepts. It is an image thinking  that helps structuring information,  better evaluation, understand, create, remember and produce new ideas. Mostly, mind mapping avoids boring and linear thoughts. It will stir your creativity and make note taking fun again.

We can use a mind map for:

  • Taking down notes and summarizing
  • Problem solving
  • Studying and memorization
  • Planning (1, 5, 10 Year Plans)
  • Researching and consolidating information from various sources
  • Presenting information
  • fast insight on difficult subjects

To create a mind map, take pen or pencil and a piece of paper and just get to it. If your doing something like a 5 year plan (which I advise all my students to do), I would advise doing it in a great state. Perhaps drink a little coffee, followed by a 10 minute pure silence of meditation (focusing on deep breaths, clearing your head) then begin writing your mind map. Here is a mind map my assistant made for us.

Here’s how it goes:

Step 1:

Draw a circle (you can use any shapes that you want) and write down the description of your goal inside the circle at the middle of your mind map.

Step 2:

Around the circle at the middle of the map, note down any of the major elements of your plan. Use lines to connect them back to the center.

Step 3:

List any minor characteristics, points or attributes for each major goal. Use lines to connect each major characteristic to its minor characteristics.


To effectively apply Mind Maps,  you can use different colors for visual impact, symbols and images for more creative thinking. When done, you could even put some small magazine cut outs to it, like your future mansion or beach holiday, or a language your going to be proficient at.

Lastly put up a photocopy of the mind map on your bedroom and bathroom wall. In the short term ups and downs that life naturally brings, your mind map keeps you focused on the bigger picture— your success!

If you do any form of research, planning or note taking, try experimenting with Mind Maps. You’ll love using them! I also have a ‘Life Trial Balance and Values Chart’ which you can do separately a couple of days after doing your Mind Map (if it’s a like a 5 Year Mind Map that is). I recommend for all my friends to firstly do a Mind Map. Secondly do the Life Trial Balance and Value’s Charts. I do these myself regularly.

This will take 3 to 15 minutes depending on if you really do the activity and make the decision. Or just 3 minutes if you read it, yet you may not get the results.

If they are words like hard, challenging, annoying, difficult or any words alike, then we have a problem.  The words you just said set your frame or mindset. If you think them, you live them.  If you think dating is hard, it’s not going to become easier. If you think it’s easier, will it be easier?

Possibly. It certainly won’t get any harder!

Makes sense right? Try talking about the general topic of dating with your friends.

Just ask them, “When I say dating what are the first things that come to your head?”

Suggest asking some friends that are successful or enjoy dating, and some that don’t!




3 Mindset Strategies For Effective Dating

Dating is fun.

a)      Be optimistic. – You attract positive experiences when you think of positive things. Having a positive attitude makes one attractive. Nobody wants to be with negative people.

b)     Don’t pressure yourself. – There are a lot of possible partners anywhere; keep trying until you find the one. Don’t quit. You just haven’t found the right person for you yet, and  it’s not because of you.

c)      Lighten Up. – Don’t take dating and finding your “soul mate” too serious.  Dating should be an enjoyable process and not a checklist of do’s and dont’s. Have FUN because dating is fun … it’s supposed to be!


Dating is intense.

a)      Fear, anxiousness, relief, laughter, happiness are part of the adventure. We go on a roller coaster ride of emotions.

b)     Intensity & Passion comes naturally.

c)      Just consider that anything you are “intense” about is part of the filtering process for finding the right one.


Dating is supposed to be natural.

a)      It’s hard that all of a sudden you are supposed to like and be liked by someone you just met. You know how to make friends right? Apply the same logic to dating, take the pressure off yourself and your date. Start by trying to be their friend.

b)      Dating is not just finding love but meeting new friends.

c)      Dating is a natural way to make new friends and perhaps find a new partner.

d)      Dating is a natural process, we need to do it. It’s probably better if we do more than less of it right?


 Dating is fun, dating is intense and dating is natural!

Having troubles recalling people’s names? It happens to almost every person from time to time. Some people easily forget and some have sharp memory. Which side do you want to be on? Since we are babies until we become adults, we are hearing our names. It’s the most important word in the world for us. For that reason, simply calling people by their names can have a tremendous positive effect. In fact the simple art of remembering names is a key to open many doors and maintain initial bonds with anyone we meet. I found this skill particularly easy to learn, and most beneficial to practice. Remembering names is actually very simple. You just have to focus and discipline yourself. Here are some of my Name Memory Techniques I can share:

  • Hello Name TagWhen you are introduced to a new person, repeat his/her name. Confirm you heard and pronounced it right. Ask them to spell it out perhaps, especially if it’s foreign.
  • Once you got their name, keep on repeating his/her name on your mind.
  • Match the person’s name with somebody you know that has the same name or distinct character she/he has. When the new person has a name you already know, you can easily link them together (and the reverse when meeting people with strange Nordic or Chinese names). Think what does this new John have in common with the the other John I knew? Ahhh, I have it, he is tall and funny like the other John.
  • Creative linkings are also effective memory techniques. For example, I have a friend in Switzerland called “Tudors.” For him, I imagine two doors opening from his face and inside is a little Tudors laughing. Funny associations work best! Perhaps you can Imagine someone called “Ali” bouncing around like Mohammed Ali singing his famous quote, “float like a butterfly, sting like a bee.”
  • Another creative association could be bees flying out of Bebe’s nose. Or imagining a cat running around “Catherine” (Cat-a-run) hair.
  • To help the link particularly if its weak, repeat their name in conversation,“Nice to meet you John.” “Wow John that’s amazing.” The more it’s used the more likely it is to be remembered.
  • Introduce the people to each other, “Michael, have you met John and Catherine?”
  • When leaving, don’t forget to say their name one last time.
  • To reinforce the name even further. Just before going to sleep, remember all the people that you met that day repeat all their names and something you remember about them such as where they were from, their hobby or job.
  • A side note, a good networking technique is obviously to collect business cards or to write down their details; however jot down a little longer note. Perhaps something about your conversation, or something that you talked about with them to help you recall the person and conversation. Then if you call them back in future you will be able to recall the person much clearer and it will be easier to gain their support.

Now that you have the techniques, you just have to set yourself a reminder to practice them regularly. 21 Day Theory will do the trick! For the next couple of months, in all of your future events, practice these techniques. Next thing you know, you will be walking out events saying goodbye to everybody with not just a handshake but being able to confidently recall everybody’s name. WeChat, Chinese version of Whats Up, Kakao, and Skype all put together. This is slowly expanding outside of China. Having used many application programes on my journey I have to say this is by far the best as at 2013. I simply get annoyed by people trying to contact me on other systems now.  Favourite feature, when busy, you simply send a voice message. no need to tap each letter, just record up to 1 minute of voice and send. However I guess we have to wait till the population catches up

Body Language, a simple game teaching and improving one’s ability to notice and understand Facial Micro Expressions. This game has greatly improved my natural ability to communicate with people. If only everybody would play this game instead of Crazy Birds.

Dropbox, I use this on my computer as well. It automatically uploads all my camera photos and video when in WiFi areas. Its great for sharing files between different devices, computers and very easy to share folders with family, friends or Outsourced staff. Right now I have the ability to spontaneously do an interview, record it with my mobile phone, upload it to Dropbox and have my Virtual Assistant turn it into a blog or article, and return it in under a day.

DigiCal. Calendar, the Android and Iphone standard calendars simply are not enough for successful people. Your calendar should have a large Widget so you can easily see appointments, goals for the day. For my preferences the calendar must also sync with google calendar. (Many roaming entrepreneurs use Google Applications to keep our data mobile and in synch)

Evernote, if I wake up in the night and have some crazy idea, I no longer turn on a light and write it down. I simply turn on this app and make a sound recording. In the morning the app has synchronised with my desktop and the note/sound/image is there. Also has email and share functions.

My Daily Success, put in your daily goals, Ie. Eating salads, drinking 2L of water, exercising, increasing vocabulary, installing a new habit. With this app your goals are then presented in a large Widget so you see them and easily tick them off as their accomplished. The Widget changes colour once all goals are completed. Complete all before sleeping everyday!

Nature Sound, after some time this has become an essential app. I use it for sleeping or going into meditation while on planes or in noisy places.  I will post a separate blog about self-hypnosis tracks which put me to sleep on planes later.

Opera Mini, an Internet explorer however you can easily save pages for reading later. I regularly look up the cities and countries I’m visiting on WikiTravel and save their pages instead of carrying Guide Books.

Skyscanner, one time I was stuck at an Australian Airport. JetStar wouldn’t let me on my flight to Japan as I didn’t have an ongoing ticket pre-purchased to exit Japan. I’ve entered Japan twice without this however this time the Airline insisted I buy an ongoing ticket. I had little choice but to buy one through them. Luckily I had this application installed. Within 10 minutes I had booked the cheapest possible ticket out of Japan on a new discount airline for a fraction of the price.

That’s it guys, please have a try of one or two of these mobile phone applications. Only try a one or two at a time though in order to adapt gradually. If your phone is slow, try removing some old unused app’s as they frequently take up space and some even slow down your phone even when not in use.



The 21 day theory is something I teach my clients  and friends on a regular basis!  I have used 21 day theory on myself to develop habits such as drinking a glass of ice water every morning, choosing salads over chips and brushing my teeth with my left hand. A great habit I developed is looking back when ever leaving a taxi or a table.

Definition Habit:

1. A recurrent, often unconscious pattern of behavior that is acquired through frequent repetition.

2. An established disposition of the mind or character.

3. Customary manner or practice.


Habits can be bad or good. We can use 21 day theory to simply fill our lives with new positive good habits. It’s just a matter of forcing yourself to do the desired actions for 21 days. I set reminders, post it notes, phone alarms, calendars, whatever it takes. You have to force yourself to do it repeatedly for 21 days and then it will become a habit. If your habit was going to the gym every Wednesday,it means you would have 21 consistent gym sessions. If it was giving up the morning cigarette, 21 days of switching that cigarette for a glass of cold water or meditation could do the trick.

Research shows that it takes 21 days to develop a habit. That’s 21 days to reflection, 21 days of going to the fitness center everyday or exercising in some way, 21 days of eating healthier foods, 21 days responsibility, 21 days of anything. When starting a habit, don’t say to yourself you are doing it for life, tell yourself that you are going to undertake it for 21 days. When trying to break a habit, this can also work. On the other hand, study has shown that the neural pathways to any habit could be constant and a sign or a trigger can be a reason for us to start support an old habit, like smoking. This is not a bad thing. We just have to be conscious of our view when we have given up a habit such as smoking. We tend to tell our conscious mind we are going to transform and it’s for life, when starting or breaking any habit. Changing a habit is never that easy. If it were, over eaters would all be thin, alcoholics would never setback, and everybody would be up early enough to eat a healthy breakfast before work.

For a lot of people, getting out from a bad habit is a lifetime effort backed up by the truth that those well-worn synaptic pathways never leave. There’s no clear scientific basis why it would take three weeks to break an old habit or make a new one. However, in several ways, this system works for me and lots of my associates.

If something goes inappropriate, it can take weeks before that thing to be right again. Though the 21 days theory claims is dependent on a person’s routine, I am confident that the technique to develop a habit works wonderfully for me. I’m sure also for you.

Just 21 days

F.lux is a simple program you can install on your computers, Ipads, Iphones to help you sleep at night. By adjusting your computers brightness and contrast, or reducing Blue Light.

Generally we have our screens bright at day time. F.lux is a simple program for reducing the light at night time. It is small, easy, and can help you sleep. Particularly, if you use your gadgets prior to sleep.

According to research blue light should be avoided two hours before going to sleep. However it doesn’t harm to start a few hours earlier. It also helps relax your eyes.

I use this program myself, and I recommend you try it as well.


You can also try the opposite. Use a Blue Light, Go Light, or similar device to wake you up in the morning or help you if you are working on Night Shift. Be aware though, by doing this you are playing with your natural body clock which may have side effects.

I regularly tell people being a millionaire is pretty easy, it really is. However it takes regular committed work, and you have to conquer human nature. This is why most people don’t do it.

Well human nature is the main thing that stops all of us from achieving higher success. Many people will not be able to achieve success if they do not conquer the natural human characteristic that stands in the way.

The points I listed below are what I learned first hand and witnessed time and time again. Not just in my culture and in my society, but every where I went in the world. I’ve also learned elements of this again and again by listening to famous success and motivational experts such as Tony Robbins, Napoleon Hill, Dale Carnegie, Brian Tracy, and more.

We always want the most for the least. We are greedy.

  • If given a choice between more or less, we almost always choose more. We strive to maximize whenever possible.
  • If 2 pieces of fruit are the same price but one is bigger, which one do you buy?
  • We are naturally greedy.
  • We continuously want more and more out of everything. We rarely get contented.


We always strive to improve our condition. We are lazy and ambitious.

  • Human nature always seeks faster and easier ways to get what it wants.
  • We are structured mentally in such a way that we cannot consciously choose a more   difficult way to accomplish something if we have an easier way.
  • We may not always succeed but every action we take is an attempt to be better.
  • Even suicide, or starving ourselves on a crazy diet is an attempt to make our situation better.

Adrian Program

Look, you may wonder why I write about this but it’s incredibly important to me.

I’ll never forget returning home after my 2nd year of backpacking. I meet my friend Maxy from New Zealand. One of the worlds wildest backpackers. And we are at my home town. And Maxy ask me, “Adrian, you don’t look happy.”

I had a blast around the world. I was going back out for more. But I wasn’t keeping balance.

I drank too much. Partied too hard. Put on a bit of weight and wasn’t achieving any more.

Around my waist there was a fair bit of weight. I weighed more than I ever had before. And I made a promise to myself that I would make my health a much higher priority.

From then on, no matter where I was, I would regularly visit gyms or workout regardless of location.

Ideally, I will hit the gym every 4th day of the week but no less than a workout a week.

Making that commitment to continually work our while traveling turned out to be the one of the best decisions I ever made. And it’s one not done by many.

I’ll never forget living with a girl friend in Romania and walking from her warm apartment, through the cold snow to go to a gym which looked much like any gym in Australia. Alternatively I remember going to a gym in Chiang Mai, a real local gym, not a commercial one, where we lifted things like car tires and blocks of cement.

When I can’t hit the gym like today, (Currently in Osaka Japan) I’m lucky to have my imagination….. And Army training.


It starts real simple and I want to share it with you so you can see how easy it can be.

1. I make a strong short coffee, and play some upbeat music

2. I write up my workout program.

3. Basically, the work is done. The coffee and writing it out is your commitment taken care of and since the coffee is kicking in….. Your going to get at it.


My preferred workouts are going from one muscle group the next. I may go through a cycle of 7 exercises like below. Or I may cycle between any 2 exercises. After completing one set, I rest that set of muscles while working out a different set.

I have a plan for hitting my core, arms and shoulders. Today, I have a space which is just 3 x 3 meters, which is like a lounge room/bed room of a friends house. I’m actually extremely blessed today. I have this space, privacy, some music, a fan (it’s summer), a blanket for padding, my backpack (can use as weight) and a bicycle which I’ll use after to ride down town to meet some friends later.

Most of the time, I alter between 10-40 repetitions of each activity (push ups, dips, crunches etc) with varying sets (working through each activity once being a set). By trying different workout program, my muscles are constantly challenged, rather than adapting to the no. of reps. Variation is good for muscles too. When I’m building muscles, I increase weight or angles to make it harder. This is like running fast sprints as compared to long slow distance (LSD).

Try this sometime when you get home; play some music, make a short coffee, create a simple plan and give it a go. Feel the caffeine and music as it energize you. Appreciate how nice it is to have these luxuries. Appreciate how good it is that you can do this. Look back on all the good things that happened in the week, reflect and appreciate all good things while you are exercising. Enjoy!

Firstly let me remind you, richness is not just term that means having a lot of money. And I think this is where people often go wrong.

I know this because, this is exactly where I went wrong.

And this cost me …

Just as Chocolate can be rich, your life can be rich, without a million dollar bank balance. But sometimes entrepreneurs or those driven for success can forget this valuable point.

Being Rich

 Think about this for a minute.

Is it more important that I am being rich. Or am rich.



For me, I like to use the sentance being rich to draw attention to the concept of being.Being present, being aware, being in abundance. I would prefer to ‘be’ in richness than to say have it in a bank balance.

Richness can be in love, in love from family, friendships or intimate relationships.

Richness in health, in able body or appreciation and gratitude for the simple gift of a breath.

Richness in personal characteristics or content.

Richness in having the courage to stand up for myself and my friends.

Richness in mindfulness and bliss.

Richness in freedom to pursue my passions.



One of my favourite Coaching techniques (in 2012 anyway) is a Holistic Trial Balance. It’s a trial balance for your life.

This simple trial balance can be used to measure or check on the most important areas of your life. And if you want a spreadsheet just for money, there is a link for one at the bottom.

The Holistic Trial Balance


1. Start with a piece of paper and fold it into half, then into half, then into half again. Now you will have 8 squares. Label these squares: Finance, Health, Personal Development, Recreation, Social, Love, Family, and Community.

2. In the top right of each square, place a rating between 1-10 regarding how important this square is in your life. How important is Finance to your life right now. 10 for most important, 1 for the lowest. You can repeat the same number, you can have 3 x 10’s if that is the case. You could even add extra boxes as you get the hang of this exercise.

3. Spend 30 seconds to a couple of minutes on each square. Next to the rating, give a score as to how you are doing in this square right now.

4. Next write some points to work on in each square. For example, Finance 9 / 4 (finance is really important but scoring poorly) – Set up a savings Account – Negotiate a rise – Garage sale.

5. Repeat the process when you feel necessary or what I really strongly suggest is to schedule it in your calendar for the first Sunday of EVERY MONTH.




It is amazing how effective this is. Just by writing this out, you can clarify a lot to yourself and it’s surprising how many points are completed.

We will look at investing in terms of money later. However, please always remember, the best investment you can make is in your self.

In my early 20’s I was 90% focused on financial wealth. It kind of worked really well. I made a lot of money until the quality of other area’s in my life became so deteriorated that they suddenly and unexpectedly fell apart.

Life is delicate and you can be rich in any area of life. Just need to be aware that an outside, or third person perspective can be priceless. Being to rich in one area can cause problems. As can being too weak.

Remember, the chain breaks at the weakest link.

Hi everybody! Many people have asked me for help on how to improve specific and general areas of their life. Health and how to lose weight are the common issues.

It’s easy to give good strategies; however after our session finishes, they would go back to their old lifestyle and motivation quickly fades. This is where our Smart Phones can really come into good use.


How to Lose Weight by using your Mobile Phone:

Let’s do something very simple and effective. Let’s use our background picture on the mobile phone to help us implement positive changes in our life.

Some people change their wallpapers on a regular basis. I personally have mine, a photograph when I was volunteering in the Philippines (Jao Island). Every time I see it, I’m reminded to be grateful for what I have, and to work harder (so I can earn more and send those guys some new books to start their library). However, sometimes I change my background picture. If I have a new tough habit to eliminate or start, I may simply use my phone’s background picture as a way to support that change. Sometimes, I even take a photograph of my new mind map or goals.

Recently, I had a client wrote a positive message on a piece of paper. It was something like, “I love eating healthy food and drinking lots of water“. Then she took a photograph of it, and set it as his phone’s wallpaper. Two weeks later, he said he had eaten healthier food and drank more water every single day!

Please note as I’m a Licensed NLP Practitioner. I urge you not to write something like “stop eating so much” or “eat less fatty food” as our minds often misinterpret it as “eat so much” or “eat fatty food.” Another mistake can be “I’m quitting smoking” as this means I am smoking, and some time in the future, “I will try to quit.” We really need to keep messages positive. Or if negative, look for it’s antonym. “I love the feeling of breathing fresh air in my lungs, I feel so good now I am healthy.”

Once this message is set as our phone’s background, we will be reminded of it  frequently. Every time we look at it, the thought will go deeper and deeper into our mind. After 21 days (see my “21 Day Theory” blog) the message has become a solid habit. We can then change the background to implement a new message (i.e. I am confident) or habit (i.e. drink 2L of water everyday). Repeat the process of installing new positive strategies in our lives.

Following this simple technique with your phone is 100% free and easy. However, you can donate some money to a homeless charity if you like.

Not only a strategy for health but, for installing many new life changing habits easily.

Here is some advice I originally received from a healthy fitness fanatic friend. It’s really simple and will help you slim down. Are you ready for it? It’s not really hard and complex.

I wrote this around 2011 and just updated it! This is still very valid, I’m in my late 30’s, with 2 kids and the slimmest/fittest in my family tree including cousins. 


First thing in the morning, drink a glass of Ice/Chilled water. That’s it. Or perhaps a bit more. Repeat this every day.

iced waterWhy? Because it makes your inner body cold. Then your body burns energy to make it warm again. Drinking water in the morning will instantly hydrate you and improve blood circulation. Actually, there are different opinions on how helpful this is for removing toxins from your body. But this matter is discussed enough that I assume it is at least worth mentioning water consumption. Who does not want to appear better looking and in good health, right?

Throughout the day, drink cold water. Cold water converts fats to energy which assist in keeping you slim. Calories are burned when your body has to heat up the water to average body temperature. Your metabolism is increased by drinking cold water. Cold water is not only a good thirst quencher, but also a cool down aid, especially if you live in hot places or just normally perspire a lot. It’s best to drink some cold water when you feel all heated up and dehydrated after a heavy workout or an intense cardio session. It instantly helps bring down your body temperature.

An alternative for those ‘hoooked on soft drinks’ is simply carbonated or sparkling water. This is common in many parts of Europe. My dad was, for most of his life drinking all kinds of things but water! For him when he got into sparkling water it was a game-changer.

Note, when I was in the Army (7 Years).  I was trained and still believe that if you are dehydrated, warm water will be absorbed quicker; however, this is if you are dehydrated due to exhaustion.


UPDATE: 2019 I spent many years living in China. They may have a heart attack reading this. In TCM, Traditional Chinese Medicine, they preach drinking warm water. Even hot water. I believe the thinking here is conservation. To conserve energy and health. I now drink both warm and cold water. In winter or when kids have the flu, try: Slices of Ginger & Lemon with boiling water. After it cools down, add RAW honey. Raw is by far the best and if you put it in very hot water, it won’t be raw anymore, so let it cool down. Raw honey has loads of good stuff in it. In fact, I’ll often give kids a spoon with just a little honey to suck!


Now, this water drinking needs to become a habit.  To help make it a habit here is an article I wrote on 21 Day Theory.
